The role
This is an exciting opportunity for a Senior Research Associate (SRA) to join the ESRC Centre for Sociodigital Futures (www.bristol.ac.uk/censof) as part of the Organising Futures Domain. The SRA will join a genuinely interdisciplinary team (crossing Management, Sociology, STS, Computer Science and Engineering) and will explore what it means to ‘organize’ in a sociodigital era. The times, spaces and powers of organizing and organizations are being altered by the by the algorithmic shaping of human and non-human activity. We are researching new ways to understand agency, decision making, skill and even what it means to decide that a particular sociodigital arrangement is ‘an organization’ and develop methods for making organizing ‘visible’, across time and space, within and between organisations.
What will you be doing?
- Contributing to the design, development, implementation and delivery of fieldwork and research projects with the Organising Futures Domain;
- Collaborating with other Domains of Practice teams, the Threads, Technical Affordance Projects (TAPs) and Futures Studio teams to design, co-ordinate, and deliver research and other activities across the Centre;
- Collaborating with the Centre’s strategic partners (for example BT, Defra, Locality) in developing the programme of research and activities;
- Playing a lead role (with support) in analysis and in the preparation of publications, other outputs (including blogs, social media, etc.), and wider impact and engagement.
The successful applicant will be supported in establishing research independence and a strong research profile, to include: an emerging track record of research publication, impact on policy and practice, and potential for securing external research funding.
You should apply if
You have:
- A PhD in a relevant field (e.g. Management, Sociology, Human Geography)
- Significant background knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas: science and technology studies, organization theory, action research
- Strong qualitative research skills, to include: ethnography, interviewing, creative methods
- Experience of or capacity for/interest in interdisciplinary research across Social Science and Computer Science/Engineering
Experience of:
- independent and collegial academic contribution for fostering an active research culture.
- writing and producing academic and other written materials
- facilitating academic and other cross-sectoral workshops and events
