The Department of Health Sciences at the College of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences at Brunel University London is recruiting a research assistant to work on a project exploring how fear and attention to movement affect dizziness and balance perceptions in community-dwelling older adults. Fear can directly impact on both actual and perceived balance performance, and thereby influence risk of falls both in clinical and non-clinical populations. The project will explore the underlying (neurophysiological) mechanisms at play, using different movement analysis and brain imaging techniques, with the ultimate aim to inform intervention strategies.
The purpose of the role is to lead on recruitment and (scheduling of) data collection sessions. This will involve the recruitment of around 50 community-dwelling older adults, and the collection of data for a range of balance assessments using electromyography, force plates, virtual reality, and brain imaging equipment (functional near-infrared spectroscopy). To achieve this the appointed candidate will have to be able to work independently where necessary. Another key role is to contribute to the preparation of scientific reports/journal articles
Candidates should have completed a BSc (essential) or MSc (desirable) in Neuroscience, Psychology, Movement/Sports Science, or other relevant discipline. Experience with relevant movement analysis methods is required. You should be able to demonstrate critical thinking, and keen to learn and improve skills in a supportive research environment. Experience working with older or clinical populations is desirable. The ability to work both independently and in a team are essential.
Closing date for applications: Wednesday 17th May 2023 (Midnight)
Interviews will take place in week commencing 24 May 2023 (virtual)
