Job description

This role will support the application of computational modelling using exascale computing by assisting in the re-development of core algorithmic components of the Nektar++ spectral/hp element framework. This position will investigate the role of high-performance computing and exascale technology, in creating an efficient and flexible programming framework for high-order spectral element methods with a particular focus on compressible flow simulations

You will drive the programming and development of high-order spectral/hp element methods and solver technology, suitable for exascale platforms, that are required to meet a range of challenging problems in the aerospace and energy sectors. These will be implemented in the Nektar++ framework (www.nektar.info). You will also have the opportunity to engage with a number of world-leading partners through the Nektar++ community.


Duties and responsibilities



  • Develop efficient software algorithms and implementations for high-order spectral/hp element methods for compressible flows on high-performance parallel computing platforms within Nektar++.

  • Collaborate closely with other members of the Nektar++ team

Essential requirements



  • Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals

  • Experience of dealing with other researchers, engineers or physicists

  • Practical experience of collaborative software development using C++

  • Knowledge of modern C++ language and template meta-programming

  • Knowledge of software-development best practices

  • Knowledge of parallel programming using MPI

  • Knowledge of high-order spectral/hp element methods

  • Knowledge of compressible flow research methods


Those appointed at Research Associate level


Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering or a closely related discipline.


Those appointed at Research Assistant level


A first / masters degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering or a closely related discipline.


  • Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant.
