The Major Trauma Ward (8AEast) at the Royal Sussex County Hospital are excited to offer the opportunity to apply for a Band 5 Staff Nurse post at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. Our patients have sustained multiple complex injuries from road traffic collisions, falls from a height, accidents at work and home, sports injuries and sometimes injuries as a result of violence and self harm. Our specialist care includes spinal injuries, complex orthopaedic and plastics injuries, skin grafts and complex wound care. Chest traumas, including multiple rib fractures and chest drains for lung injuries and patients requiring complex pain management.

We are a friendly 22 bedded, mixed sex ward. A busy ward catering for a variety of complex injuries ranging from major lacerations to complex road traffic trauma patients offering nurses a chance to develop skills in high dependency nursing. We offer an excellent experience in basic nursing care, specialist trauma skills, rehabilitation and complex discharge planning.

A kind and compassionate manner, with an interest in providing an excellent standard of care are essential.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, caring nurse with recent acute experience or newly qualified to join our team. We are a very supportive team and can offer a structured Orientation Programme and are happy to give you help and guidance to develop. There are a variety of study days and specialist courses held within the Trust and with Brighton & Sussex University to support your learning.

Clinical
1. Develop an understanding of all elements of the nursing process and be able to assist the registered nurse in the on-going assessment, planning, management and evaluation of care.
2. Support individuals with all aspects of care including daily living, providing person-centred care and promoting health and independence through awareness raising and care navigation to other professionals as appropriate.
3. Perform and record clinical observations as per NEWS2 and Trust policy and escalating as appropriate
4. Administer oral medications safely and in a timely manner following successful completion of the medications administration competency (excluding controlled drugs)
5. Undertake clinical tasks including venepuncture, cannulation,, ECGs, NG feeding, Collar care, Pin site care, Traction care etc.
6. Accurately record nutritional and fluid intake
7. Ensure the privacy and dignity and safety of individuals is maintained at all times
8. Demonstrate the ability to recognise changing priorities. Seeking advice from the registered nurse or other registered care professional as appropriate
9. Report back and share information with the registered nurses on the condition, behaviour, activity and response of individuals
10. Recognise issues relating to safeguarding vulnerable adults and children and report any problems or concerns to the appropriate registers care professionals
11. Assist in the assessment of and contribute to the management of risk across several areas within the environment where care is being administered.
12. Assist in the implementation of appropriate action to meet the specific physical, emotional, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual needs of individuals and carers
13. Assist in the delivery of complex care as prescribed by the registered nurse
14. Develop an understanding of caring for individuals with particular conditions specific to your area of practice.
15. Develop skills in relation to coaching / teaching and delegating to individuals / carers / other staff
16. Assist in the implementation and monitoring of clinical standards and outcomes
17. Develop a working knowledge of other providers’ resources and referral systems to ensure individual’s needs are met
18. Engage in reflective practice including management of self and reflection on own reactions, asking questions and reflecting on answers given
19. Demonstrate a good understanding of principles of consent and ensure valid consent is obtained prior to undertaking nursing and care procedures
20. Demonstrate a good understanding of the Mental Capacity Act / Deprivation of Liberties and applies principles to everyday practice seeking advice / guidance from the registered nurse or registered care professional
21. Ensure the safe custody of patients’ valuables and property
