Do you have the skills and experience to help us eliminate the hepatitis C virus (HCV) in Sussex?
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Hepatitis C Engagement Nurse to join the Sussex Viral Hepatitis Operational Delivery Network, on a two-year fixed term contract. This new role will pay a key part in locally delivering on NHS England’s goal to eradicate HCV by 2025, supporting the World Health Organisation in its commitment to eliminate HCV as a major public health threat by 2030.
The successful applicant will help to identify, engage, support and encourage individuals living with HCV to access curative treatment and appropriate healthcare services in Sussex. Working in community and hospital locations they will support case finding initiatives to identify undiagnosed patients, link them into care and track their progress. The role will have a strong focus on reducing healthcare inequalities within vulnerable adult populations.
The post holder will promote HCV testing, and train staff to carry out testing within outreach and community settings e.g. drug and alcohol services, hostels, GP Practices etc. They will also support the specialist hepatology nurses with FibroScanning and ultrasound guided Phlebotomy (training will be provided as required).
Expectations of the post holder would be an adaptable, enthusiastic and organised nurse who is capable of delivering patient focused, high quality care, alongside excellent communication skills. Proven strong organisation skills are essential as is the ability to work flexibly to deadlines to effectively support projects. The post holder will have the ability to work within the team as well as independently, and would be required and expected to travel across Sussex. A valid UK driving license is essential along with access to a vehicle for work purpose.

1. Undertake case finding initiatives to identify patients with hepatitis C, working with Hepatology nursing team, Hepatitis C trust peers, Hepatology Data team, GP practices, laboratory databases and other organisations
2. Liaise with patients to encourage them to enter care and to manage their pathway, ensuring a convenient date, time and location is agreed
3. To appropriately remind clients of their appointment to facilitate care. This may include sending reminder letters or contacting patients by telephone, or text
4. Facilitate the prioritisation of HCV positive individuals, by supporting the coordination of assessments at outreach clinics and linkage into care pathways
5. Lead the development of protocols and materials to support the training of outreach/community partners
6. Manage database of HCV positive individuals in order to track treatment journeys
7. Support the Viral Hepatitis team by taking blood for HCV testing and Fibro scanning patients at outpatient and outreach clinics within Sussex
8. To motivate and encourage staff within outreach clinics e.g. drug and alcohol services to routinely offer HCV testing by capillary, oral or dry blood spot testing
9. Monitor the performance of HCV testing by organisations in the community e.g. drug and alcohol and sexual health clinics
10. Maintain a record of HCV training delivered within the ODN; including competencies, monitoring and evaluating effectiveness of training
