Job description

We are looking to recruit friendly and enthusiastic Staff Nurses with excellent communication skills to work on the Acute Assessment Unit and Emergency Ambulatory care Unit.

We would welcome applications from both Newly qualified nurses and those with previous acute care experience.

The role will involve assessment and provision of nursing care for patients from all specialities. This role will provide variety and allow you to develop skills to care for both medical and surgical patients having a wide range of procedures. You will need to have good acute assessment skills and be able to cope under pressure in a busy environment.

We work closely with all teams associated with emergency admissions and admission avoidance.

We work on a system of internal rotation of shifts including weekends and night duty. ROLE SUMMARY

  • The post holder will work on a rotational post as a staff nurse in the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) , the Emergency Ambulatory Care Unit (EACU) to provide an effective, safe environment of care for individual patients, their relatives and carers.
  • Deliver patient-centred care nursing./.health professional care on AAU, EACU aiming to achieve the highest possible standards of care, in accordance with the Trust’s Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery.
  • Provide best clinical professional practice.
  • In the absence of more senior nursing/ health professional staff may be required to undertake specific ward/ department management duties, as delegated by ward manager.
  • Assist in the provision of a working environment which is conducive to learning for all staff and students
  • The post holder will be working in an unpredictable environment within the clinical area (e.g. violence and aggression and Clinical emergencies).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Knowledge Registered Nurse - first or second level registration

Skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to work as part of a team

Ability to adapt to different ward environments

Experience Previous experience in a medical or surgical speciality is desirable but not essential

KEY RESULT AREAS:
1 Provides effective, safe, evidence based patient care in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct

1.1 Adheres to NMC code of conduct

1.2 Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates individualised evidence based patient care

1.3 Works in accordance with ward philosophy and nursing model

1.4 Effectively processes admissions & transfers and plans discharges in accordance with BSUH policy and standards

  • Actively participates in promotion of education for patients, their relatives and colleagues with consideration to resources available
1.6 Ensures provision of all drugs as prescribed in accordance with BSUH policy, including parenteral administration

1. Participates in management of the ward

2.1 Prioritises care and delegates workload and ward activities appropriately to HCA’s and other staff; may be required to take charge of the ward on an ad hoc basis

2.2 Effectively and professionally deals with emergency situations

  • Participates in the supervision, mentorship and development of students and colleagues
2.4 Adheres to local and National policies and guidelines

2.5 Ensures safe practice with regard to moving and handling, SHARPS, infection control etc

2.6 Responsible for self development and actively participates in BSUH Strategy for Nursing and Band 5 development programme

2.7 Contributes and actively participates in correct reporting and handling of incidents and accidents

2.8 Has awareness of ward and team dynamics

2.9 Participates in continuous practice development and audits of the ward

2.10 Identifies and reports malfunctioning equipment and takes necessary action

2.11 Ensures adequate ward stock levels are maintained

2.12 Maintains awareness of ward resource issues

2.13 Processes patient property and valuables in accordance with BSUH policy.

2.14 Participates in mentorship of newly qualified staff and Health Care Assistants

1. Promotes effective communication in the Ward area

  • Participates in ward handover
3.2 Participates in medical ward rounds, discharge planning and other multidisciplinary team meetings and ward team meetings

3.3 Provides accurate documentation of patient care in accordance with BSUH and national policies

3.4 Builds effective relationship with patients’ relatives and carers and other members of the nursing and multi-disciplinary team

3.5 Makes and receives telephone calls with due courtesy, effectively imparting and recording information taking into account confidentiality, Caldicott and Data Protection

3.6 Handles complaints and plaudits in a professional manner and in accordance with Trust policy

3.7 Liaises with the ward manager, senior nurse and colleagues regarding any issues/areas of concern

COMPETENCE

  • The post holder is required to participate in the Trust appraisal process and work towards meeting identified development needs.
  • The post holder is required to demonstrate on-going continuous professional development.
  • At no time should the post holder work outside their defined level of competence. If the post holder has concerns regarding this they should immediately discuss this with their Manager/Supervisor/Consultant. The post holder has the responsibility to inform those supervising their duties if they are not competent to perform a duty.
