The Oak Centre for Children and Young People at The Royal Marsden is one of the largest comprehensive centres' in the UK treating and delivering the highest quality of care for Children, Teenagers and Young People with cancer. Our patients are undergoing investigations and treatments involving chemotherapy and radiotherapy as well as managing patients and families undergoing stem cell transplantation.

We are currently looking to recruit an enthusiastic, driven, and motivated band 5 paediatric or dual trained nurse . The Children’s day unit is a 9 bedded and 12 chair facility in one of the largest comprehensive children and young people’s centres in Europe which sees over 5,000 outpatients each year, caring for children and young people and their families ages 1-24 years. We care for children and young people having Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and theatre procedures under general anaesthetic.

  • To plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence-based nursing care for patients in a responsible and efficient way, which has been drawn up in conjunction with the co-ordinator of the shift
  • To develop a greater awareness and understanding of the needs of patients with cancer and the different treatment modalities administered within the unit.
  • To develop an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of managing a shift with the guidance of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse.

  • Counterchecking patients’ vital signs, blood results, patient body surface area, systemic anticancer therapy prescriptions and consent before administration of treatment.
  • Educating patients on their treatment such as indications and side effects.
  • Ensuring necessary medication and follow up appointments are obtained.
  • To plan, document, deliver and evaluate care plans from admission through to discharge / transfer discussing this with the patient, their family and multi-disciplinary teams and to alert the Sister/Charge Nurse of any changes. To set goals for each of the identified nursing issues and encourage / teach other nursing staff to do the same. To help the patient achieve set goals through care planning.
