Job overview
The trainee diagnostic nurse colposcopist will work alongside the wider colposcopy team to support the running of the colposcopy service. After undertaking BSCCP/RCOG Colposcopy Accreditation and certified cytology sample taker training the trainee diagnostic nurse colposcopist will take overall responsibility for the care of a caseload of patients requiring diagnostic colposcopy. They will also co-ordinate clinical activity to maintain an efficient and effective colposcopy and hysteroscopy service.
Main duties of the job
The nurse colposcopist will work autonomously to deliver specialist clinical care appropriate to the needs of the patient group and based on principles that are research based and which enhance the quality of patient care.
They will take direct referrals and autonomously manage patients / clients with undifferentiated or unstable problems whilst prioritising referrals according to clinical indication.
They will take direct referrals, assess, diagnose and autonomously manage patients with undifferentiated or unstable problems using a range of assessment tools, clinical guidelines and approaches (eg. Pain, sleep, nutritional status, speciality specific tools) as well as discharging and referring patients to other members of clinical team as appropriate.
The nurse colposcopist will lead in the development of evidence – based patient care policies and procedures and develop and contribute to clinical guidelines and protocols
They will provide specialist support to clinical teams in dealing with the complex needs of different client groups and when imparting or receiving sensitive, complex or contentious information.
The role will require them to lead the identification and facilitation of clinical audits to promote clinical effectiveness, as part of the Trust’s/Directorate’s Clinical Governance Framework.
The nurse colposcopist will work at least 80% of time in clinical practice, with the emphasis on delivery of a quality service to patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Work autonomously to deliver specialist clinical care appropriate to the needs of the patient group and based on principles that are research based and which enhance the quality of patient care.
Take direct referrals and autonomously manage patients / clients with undifferentiated or unstable problems. Prioritise referrals according to clinical indication.
Assess, diagnose and autonomously manage patients with undifferentiated or unstable problems using a range of assessment tools, clinical guidelines and approaches (eg. Pain, sleep, nutritional status, speciality specific tools). Discharge and refer patients to other members of clinical team as appropriate.
Be a visible point of contact for patients, visitors, relatives, and staff, acting as a resource for problems and able to clearly present the patients’ / clients’ points of view to others. Receive and investigate any complaints received.
Organise meetings to discuss patient management as required. Prepare and present the monthly multi-disciplinary team meeting.
Lead in the development of evidence – based patient care policies and procedures. Develop and contribute to clinical guidelines and protocols and lead the implementation process as required.
Provide specialist support to clinical teams in dealing with the complex needs of different client groups and when imparting or receiving sensitive, complex or contentious information.
Lead the identification and facilitation of clinical audits to promote clinical effectiveness, as part of the Trust’s/Directorate’s Clinical Governance Framework.
Identify and implement innovative ways of working within the speciality
Work at least 80% of time in clinical practice, with the emphasis on delivery of a quality service to patients.
Support the matron and nursing team in developing nursing within the speciality, leading and implementing innovative ways of working.
Oversee histology and cytology results for all patients and ensure that results are communicated and acted upon appropriately within required timescales.
Maintain failsafe system to ensure that results are acted upon appropriately and patients are not lost to follow up.
Manage and maintain the Colposcopy Autoreferral system
Take responsibility for the Colposcopy Database and produce quarterly Performance Management reports for the Department of Health (KC65)
Safeguard patients and visitors during clinic sessions, ensuring that equipment is serviced and maintained according to Trust guidelines. Arrange for repair/replacement of faulty equipment where necessary to ensure that safety is maintained and there is minimal disruption to the service.
Monitor waiting times to ensure that patients are seen and treated according to Trust and national targets.

Essential criteria
- Current Level 1 NMC registration
- ENB 998 / 997, City and Guilds 730, FLIPS or equivalent
- Evidence of study at Level 3
Desirable criteria
- Masters Level Degree
- Independent / Supplementary Nurse / Midwife Prescriber
- Certified cytology sample taker
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience working within the specialty
Desirable criteria
- Colposcopy MDT attendance
- Attendance at speciality operational meetings

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.
