About the role

Role Purpose

To support the Operations Director contributing and implementing a strategy for operations across the store portfolio. Lead the store teams to implement the strategy; motivating and inspiring them to drive sales and profits whilst delivering an engaging, trusted and rewarding customer relationship.


Commercial Decision Making


  • Working with the rest of the Regional Manager team to support the Operations Director to deliver the retail strategy
  • Leading Store Teams in a technological world using a variety of channels i.e. digital, face to face being agile at the same time
  • Business partner with key strategic functions i.e. Trading Teams, Business Risk, Commercial Finance, HR and Marketing to support an agile and results driven decision making process, being the strategic link to Retail and formalising processes to support the relationships.
  • Use BI, data and KPI’s to monitor commercial progress, identifying areas of success and proactively look for continuous improvement
  • Interprets and analyses verbal and numerical information quickly and accurately to solve problems.
  • Provides statistical analysis to challenge and influence the business to make strategic decisions.
  • Evaluates information critically, spotting flaws and overcomes obstacles
  • Generates and implements strategically focussed ideas to solve problems, and critically evaluates the impact on their KPI’s.
  • Uses intuition along with data from different sources to develop ideas and solve problems

Planning & Delivering


  • Be a key driver of change to support the Business Change agenda, implementing change programmes within retail and providing feedback and insight on progress, whilst always thinking of the end to end elements for store operations.
  • Embraces and engages with technology and digital methods of communication to maximise field support, increasing frequency of ‘online face to face’ support for store management teams to do the job better and getting greater value out of time for all.
  • Identifies when Stores are in need of in-store support, planning and re-prioritising their demands to provide greater levels of support when required.
  • Sets measurable and achievable goals for self & team aligned to strategy
  • Influence upwards to ensure central planning remains customer centric ensuring that decisions made impact the whole estate
  • Working with an agile approach they will react positively and quickly to change seeking ways to instigate and make change happen with minimal disruption and maximum impact.
  • Applies and accepts changes to own work processes with a view to minimising disruption

  • Supports colleagues to drive continual improvement across all areas
  • Identify and manage risks and develop solutions to reduce differential of store performance
  • Identify and manage financial risks and ensure cost/sales delivery within the region
  • Work with the team, making certain that availability is maintained
  • Encourage and coach Store Management teams to think proactively and plan for longer term success
  • Lead inspiring people to take action and accountability
  • Have the courage to make unpopular decisions if they are the right thing for Matalan
  • Effectively and consistency improves the benchmark of region performance

About You
