Job description
Working under the direct supervision of the Ophthalmologist and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the Weekend Cataract Receptionist/ Discharge Clerk will assist the clinical team in the provision and delivery of patient care. The role will also require you to become a trained Eye Care Liaison Officer.
The service will be operational 7 days a week and you will be required to work weekends on a rota. There is enhanced pay for working weekends.
The service will commence March 2023
Main duties of the job
- Opening up the building
- Welcoming patients
- Ensuring waiting area is tidy
- Log onto ophthalmology clinic software
- Ensure the clinic lists are printed for the surgeons
- Ensure patient notes are transferred
- Print any required clinical paperwork
- Check patients in when they arrive
- Print of the discharge letter that the ophthalmologist has prepared
- Book patients into the theatre slots when required
- At the end of the shift ensure pharmaceuticals are stored away and all areas are tidy.
- Lock up the building
About us
Newton Place Surgeryis providing a state of the art Ophthalmology service in our newly renovated premises to the patients of East Kent. Our highly respected ophthalmic consultants will be providing a number of services such as cataract surgery, treatment for minor eye conditions, treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration, OCT, hydroxychloroquine eye screening and general consultant service. Some services will run over the weekend.
Job responsibilities
- Open up building according to protocol.
- Ensure the main doors are open and signs are displayed in the relevant places.
- Ensure the chairs and waiting area is tidy.
- Display Cataract Clinic Check-In sign on Reception desk.
- Obtain Saturday cataract kit from the ECLO Room.
- Ensure staff that arrive for work sign and in and out
- Log on to the Ophthalmology clinic software (Eye Software Reception) on the computer.
- Ensure there is a printed clinic list for Reception/Clinic Assistant/Ophthalmologist.
- Check patients in as they arrive and ask them to take a seat.
- Ward Nurse will collect patient from the waiting area and prepare patient for theatre.
- Circulating Nurse or Ward Nurse will bring patient out from theatre and accompany patient back to waiting area. Circulating Nurse/Ward Nurse will hand back patients notes.
- Offer patient and carer/relative/friend a tea/coffee and biscuits immediately after surgery. Give approx. 20minutes resting time.
- Print off 2 x Discharge Letter:
- One copy is for the patient alongside the discharge notes the ophthalmologist has prepared for the patient.
- Put the other copy with the operation notes in the patients file.
- There should also be a Lens ID Card attached to the patients notes The patient should be given this in their Discharge Pack along with Maxitrol eye drops.
- After the patient has been seen in clinic, the patient will return to reception and you will need to take their notes.
- Print their clinical paperwork (GP and Optom letters and detailed report) as per the protocol.
- If they are suitable for surgery book a theatre slot (usually next day) and explain the eye drops procedure and envelope. Give the patient an appointment letter and hand them the booklet After Your Cataract Operation.
- Ensure eye drops are within date and are out of the reach of patients if/when the reception desk is unattended. Pharmaceuticals must be stored away safely at the end of the shift.
- Put patient notes in relevant slip file For surgery/Not for surgery.
- If patient books for another date keep a record of this
- At the end of clinic, make sure all patient notes are ready and in order for the surgical list the following day.
- Print PSDs, surgical lists and patient ID labels.
- Ensure all areas are tidy at the end of the shift.
- Make up more patients booklets and Discharge Packs as necessary
- Ensure surgical paperwork, labels etc. are transferred to main reception for surgery the following day.
- Put Saturday cataract kit and paperwork for patients not suitable for surgery, DNAs etc. back in the ECLO Room.
- Secure and lock the building according to the protocol.
- Some time in front of a computer where high degrees of concentration are required and the ability to cope with interruptions
