Job description
Ranger - Holt
Summary
***INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY PLEASE***
We’re looking for someone highly motivated, organised and enthusiastic to help us deliver our day-to-day nature conservation and countryside management work at one of the country’s most important National Nature Reserves on the North Norfolk Coast.
We need someone willing to learn, adaptable and able to regularly work on Sundays.
What it's like to work here
This vacancy is included in a trial of the ‘Disability Confident’ scheme (level 1).
If you have a disability, and your qualities, skills and experience are a good fit with the 'Who we're looking for' section below, we will guarantee you either a telephone or face to face interview. Please contact us at [email protected], when you apply, to let us know, quoting the reference number for this vacancy.
Reporting to an Area Ranger, you’ll be joining a team of Rangers who look after this stunning stretch of the North Norfolk Coast.
The Norfolk Coast and Broads team manage a vast area of habitat which supports some of the most important and iconic wildlife in the country. Blakeney National Nature Reserve (NNR) is particularly famous for its coastal wildlife – including little terns, grey seals and pink-footed geese.
What you'll be doing
You’ll be part of a team of Rangers at Blakeney, led by an Area Ranger and working alongside another Ranger and two very enthusiastic Apprentices. No two days will be the same and the challenges will come thick and fast but everything you do will be set against a backdrop of stunning scenery and outstanding wildlife.
You’ll play a key role in helping to manage the habitat and access across Blakeney National Nature Reserve. You’ll also play a key role in managing other small sites, including Friary Hills, and Young’s Land, to help deliver great biodiversity and access for our visitors.
You’ll also work closely with the Blakeney Point team, helping them to manage the internationally important tern colony in the summer and England’s largest grey seal colony in the winter.
Who we're looking for
Our team believe that people deserve more than just ‘good service’, but an amazing experience they’ll never forget, and we are looking for like-minded people to join us.
To deliver this role successfully, you'll need:
- Good people skills, so you can build strong relationships within your team and with local neighbours and stakeholders
- Competency in using and maintaining machinery and equipment – particularly brush cutters, mowers and tractors - and have the relevant qualifications to demonstrate this
- Practical experience in relevant land, conservation and access management
- An appreciation of the importance of health and safety legislation and the need for compliance in a countryside setting
- Experience of delivering inspirational events that help build and strengthen visitors’ connection with nature and the outdoors
- A good understanding of how to organise, motivate and reward volunteers
