1.5 DURATION: Permanent

1.6 RESPONSIBLE TO: Senior Ranger

  • OVERALL ROLE PURPOSE

Working in the countryside, for people and the environment.

  • To contribute to delivering our vision: Our people, places and experiences we offer, will inspire this and future generations to love and benefit from the environment
  • To care for natural and historic environments, providing health, social and wellbeing benefits for individuals and communities.
  • To meet our impacts:
  • Our managed landscapes will be abundant, diverse and connected
  • Lives will be enhanced from experiencing the outdoors
  • To ensure the feeling of “It’s Your Outdoors” is shared with all visitors.
  • SCOPE OF THE ROLE Our Rangers work around the lakes and reservoirs of southwest England; they conserve and protect land and property of public interest and/or of statutory designation. Rangers deliver the estate management and response necessary to protect wildlife, maintain safe public access and sustainable recreation across our estate. They help ensure compliance with statutory duties such as the Conservation Access and Recreation Code of Practice, habitat and species protection and work towards delivery of our integrated management plans.
  • Rangers operate independently in outdoor countryside environments, often lone working on and around water, as well as in small teams.
  • Rangers work alongside both the Environment team and the Visitor Experience Team. As part of our Ranger Team you will ensure a safe and enjoyable day for all visitors and have a particular responsibility for the angling and volunteering experiences at your lakes.
  • Ranger’s priorities vary dynamically throughout the year. In summer, engagement and public safety at the reservoirs is the priority, however when the risk level drops rangers can be involved in a range of tasks to best protect and maintain the estate and priority wildlife habitats. The role will include challenging conversations with the public where site rules are breached, particularly during periods of peak visitor numbers. Being comfortable working outdoors in all weather and being fit to work in these conditions whilst engaging constructively with the public is a pre-requisite.
  • Our visitor sites and fisheries are open 7 days a week, including bank holidays, and tend to be busiest at weekends, in school holidays and during good weather. Rangers work on a rota, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Rangers work varied shift patterns depending on the time of year and visitor demands.
  • KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Take the lead on day-to-day estate maintenance, ensuring the Lake and its facilities are presented to a high standard. This will include grass cutting, tree work and footpath maintenance as well as assisting with the cleaning of facilities. * Maintain excellent relationships with our visitors, assist with enquiries and promote the Trust through a public facing presence. Discourage and challenge unsafe and antisocial behaviour as required and promote responsible visiting.

  • Ensure a great angling experience is always available, including presenting fishing boats, and engaging with our anglers in a friendly, informative way. Ensure anglers are aware of the fishery rules and regulations.
  • Maximise car park and friends' membership income through education and information to the public, servicing and emptying pay and display machines.
  • Work closely with Environment team to complete habitat and species work plans, archaeological protection plans, agri-environment schemes and reporting on invasive non-native species or other conservation concerns.
  • Take responsibility for the proper care and maintenance of equipment, vehicles and facilities, carry out routine checks of playground equipment, site furniture, updating online management records and carrying out maintenance as required.
  • Complete work programmes as agreed with your line manager, but have the discretion to organise and prioritise work to an agreed timeframe and quality and have responsibility for delegated aspects. Supervise, train and monitor the activities of volunteers in practical estate and conservation tasks. Monitor the activities of others, such as contractors.
  • Work with the wider site team and volunteers, assisting with the maintenance of outdoor activity facilities (water sports and land based), to provide an excellent customer experience to all.
  • Deliver education sessions to schools and adult groups from time to time as requested.
  • Undertake training and development as required by the Trust, and be available to train colleagues.
  • Ensure that you comply with procedures to manage risk to the public, self, other staff, volunteers and contractors. Ensure that high quality risk assessments are carried out in line with Trust guidance for works you are undertaking and supervising and monitor compliance with safety procedures.
