Job Purpose
The Hub Railhead Manager is responsible for the operation of the Rail Head for the shift with a focus on the successful achievement of safety, quality of service, productivity, automation performance/utilisation (APSS) and employee targets. They will input to the processing operation and delivery of engagement and people initiatives. Ensuring that the rules and regulations of Network Rail and DB Schenker are adhered to. This role must have the ability to provide systematic and organised approach to day-to-day operation clearance. Deploying the daily rail head work plan to achieve performance and budgetary targets through participation, motivation and cross functional workings and in-flight decision making.
As the Railhead Manager they will support the Cross Dock operation and will be responsible for leading front line teams across the shift with a focus on Cross Dock and Rail Head operation. Working with the Shift Flow Manager, Engineering Manager, VOC and Distribution Manager for the successful achievement of safety, quality of service, productivity, automation performance/utilisation (APSS) and employee targets
It is vital as a Railhead Manager to create and support the environment in which trust between colleagues both frontline and managerial, underpins our focus to achieve excellence.
The Railhead Manager is responsible for first line HR processes e.g. Conduct and Attendance, Engagement, Performance etc., and for measurement and display of key metrics for the Rail Head work area, and the analysis and continuous improvement of them.
Key accountabilities
- Prioritises safety of people in day-to-day activities and undertake a risk assessment where necessary. Ensure Zones/Departments are compliant to the Health and Safety policy and procedures.
- Oversee Rail arrivals and departures process to time and quality in line with the scheduled trains
- Oversee the safe cross docking between the rail head and vehicles, managing the efficient loading and unloading of yorkes / traffic
- Liaise with other Cross Dock, Team Managers, Flow Room Operators and Managers and Engineers across the shift to ensure smooth flow of work through the Railhead, cross dock and across the Hub as required
- Ensure daily huddles take place to discuss safety, operational targets, Zone performance and continuous improvement
- Co-ordinate implementation of work area plans, regularly review performance and progress against plans
- Weekly change activity huddles with team in a trusted environment– encouraging team feedback, responding to suggestions, new ways of working etc. in line with continuous improvement
- Responsible for maintenance and analysis of all zone control systems and performance, liaising with Distribution / Flow Room
- Provide daily reports on performance and updates for team and handover to next shift
- Ownership of swift actions to rectify concerns – decision making
- Managing and motivating the team to constantly raise performance and quality standards; responsible for leading and upskilling the team
Key dimensions
- The role line manages up to 40 operatives
- Monitor adherence to KPIs: People, Customers, Efficiency, Finance and Safety.
- Liaising with Senior Management, Flow Room, Engineers, Production Control, WPCs and operatives.
- Responsible for processing of 60k parcels each shift"
Key skills, experience and qualifications
Knowledge (desirable):
- Knowledge of Rail Terminal Operations
- Understanding of specific safety regulations / SSOW and SOPs for operation of Rail operation
- Automation knowledge, mech performance metrics and the role of engineering in effective automation performance
- Understand commercial challenges facing the business, able to see the big picture to influence others
- Skills:
- Able to work under pressure in a tightly scheduled area and a predominantly outdoor environment, reacting to operational issues as they occur through team-working and problem solving with others
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and build trust within your team
- Resilience, tenacity and self-starter with excellent written, verbal and presentational communication skills
- Strong analytical, planning and organisational skills , especially in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Outlook.
- Ability to influence and challenge in a positive style
Experience:
- Demonstratable qualities in operating in a dynamic team environment, a pro-active and positive individual with the ability to persuade and influence others
- A persuasive leader with drive and a well-developed ability to identify and resolve problems to a high standard through team engagement and building trust
- Experience of managing teams in a Unionised environment.
- Experience of a cross dock operation

- Comfortable working with complex data and have attention to detail
- Able to build effective working relationships with a range of key stakeholders to achieve business objectives
