Job description
If you’re great at problem solving, have an inquisitive mind and enjoy working in a supportive team environment, then our Engineering Apprenticeship opportunities could be just what you’re looking for. You will be earning as you learn whilst you work towards a Level 3 Apprenticeship which includes an Engineering Level 3 qualification as a Technician in Traction and Rolling Stock. We will equip you with all of the technical knowledge and hands on experience that you’ll need to take your first steps into an exciting and evolving career whether it be in Mechanical/ Electrical/Digital Engineering. We are looking to recruit to our sites in Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Liverpool and Hull.
Your first year will be spent at Myerscough College in Preston, the accommodation is arranged and provided through Northern. Here you will work on your engineering skills in a classroom-based environment. You’ll be mentored and supported throughout the process, but you need to have a passion for engineering and a willingness to learn. To help you focus, and without the need for lengthy daily commute you are accommodated at the College. With space to study, mix with your fellow apprentices but also a place for you to relax and unwind with on-site facilities, such as a gym, sports facilities, local shop with public transport to the local Market Town and Preston City Centre.
The following years of your Apprenticeship will be spent within the Train Depot (Train Care Centre), working hands-on and learning from our dedicated trainers and your peers. This will help you build on your knowledge, give you practical experience which you will need to complete your assignments. You will have a number of placements in different departments at your Home Depot and during this time you'll learn all about engineering and other key elements of the business.
On completion of your Apprenticeship, you will be qualified with the experience to be able to apply for a variety of different roles with the opportunity of progressing to further study at a higher level. You could be a Maintenance Engineer with potential to then move on to be a Team Leader or Technical Engineer. Alternatively, you could move around - from Production to Safety – the opportunities within Northern are many and varied. Many of our Apprentices choose to stay with Northern after their apprenticeships and are now enjoying rewarding careers across many areas of our business.

We’re looking for candidates with a keen interest in Engineering/STEM and a desire to succeed and progress. You’ll also need at least 5 GCSEs with gained or predicted grades A to C or 9 to 4 including English and a Science at a grade 9 – 5/A-C in Maths.
