Make your skills count

At Babcock, we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as a Radioactive Waste Engineer at our Rosyth site.

As an international defence company, we support and enhance our customers’ defence and security capabilities and critical assets, meeting their requirements of value for money, increased availability, modernisation and flexibility.

Marine Engineering & Systems

The Radioactive Waste Engineer role is based within our Marine Engineering & Systems business area.

At our site in Rosyth, we aim to deliver engineering-led and world-leading products and services across our engineering, specialised manufacturing, gas handling systems and naval marine businesses.

This includes the Submarine Dismantling Project (SDP), providing a safe and environmentally responsible solution for the dismantling the UK’s de-fuelled nuclear-powered submarines after they have left service with the Royal Navy.

The role

The difference our new Radioactive Waste Engineer will make

As a Radioactive Waste Engineer, you will have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You will support timely sentencing and consignment of radioactive waste from the Rosyth site to contribute to success of the decommissioning schedule and programme.

Day to day, you will undertake necessary activities to enable suitable characterisation and sentencing of radioactive waste, such as sampling and analysis campaigns, and interpretation of data. You will provide oversight, advice and technical support to operations to ensure that all waste management (including storage, processing, packaging, transport and treatment or disposal) is in line with regulatory and management system requirements.

You will liaise with operations, engineering, radiation protection and other relevant personnel to ensure radioactive waste management procedures and standards are upheld. You will produce and maintain BPM cases to support operations and the treatment/disposal of radioactive waste. In addition, support applications and variations to Environmental Permit(s) or other authorisations/obligations to enable operations and to ensure that they are complied with.

Lastly, you will contribute to the development and implementation of any relevant processes and procedures related to radioactive waste management as well as develop and maintain a good working knowledge of available radioactive waste treatment and disposal routes, and how to demonstrate that associated Waste Acceptance Criteria can be met.

At Babcock, we have a history of helping talent go far. With our track record of innovation, you will continually develop your knowledge and expertise.

We offer flexible working to give people more options to better integrate their work and personal life, whilst ensuring that business needs are met. This is a site-based role at Rosyth with ongoing presence at the SDP decommissioning work areas to ensure compliance with approved methodologies and waste acceptance criteria. There will be some opportunity for agile working, we are happy to discuss with you in more detail.
