Based at our site in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, we are looking for a Radiation Safety Officer who will be the primary contact for all radiation matters at the Huntingdon site. Whilst affiliated to the Metabolism department, the individual will liaise internally across site and with others radiation specialists at our other UK (and global) sites as well as with our external Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA)/Radiation Waste Advisor (RWA) and other regulatory and/or enforcement bodies as required.
You will work autonomously yet will effectively utilize an indirect team of radiation protection supervisors, such that you will collaborate and communicate, across the business, using resources and planning to ensure safety, quality and timeliness of outstanding actions.
Main responsibilities will include:
Owning and continually improving the Radiation Safety Programme, across the Huntingdon and Eye sites, through management and enforcing radiological policies and procedures to ensure radiological risk management and regulatory compliance in using and handling radioactive materials
Leading in the interpretation of the regulatory requirements principally under IRR17 and REPPIR to ensure site compliance arrangements
Providing definitive radiological safety advice to operational business units, presenting guidance to a defendable ALARP position with the purpose of assisting local management in delivering compliance with IRR17
Preparing and delivery training packages within the site (and company) Radiation Safety training programme
Providing compliance oversight for radiation safety activities across all-site operations including the auditing, collation and reporting of performance metrics and incidents capturing learning and initiating corrective action as necessary; mentoring and training employees in these surveys
Providing radiological advice on the design and installation of new facilities or working processes; Supporting business growth by assessing and communicating the radiological risks and ensuring that appropriate mitigations are fully explored and understood for any new proposed process
Contributing to the Site Emergency Response team and leading in the emergency response programme for Ionising Radiation related incidents
Promoting Process Improvements to improve safety, efficiency, productivity and scientific standards and/or reduce costs
As the role evolves, there is the potential for more involvement in other aspects of the workings within the Metabolism department

Education:
Recognised Radiation Protection Supervisor training or RPA2000 Certification as RPA
Educated to degree level, e.g. Chemistry/Health Physics or a related subject
Skills and Experience:
An engaging, self-driven leader with attention to detail and the presence to influence others. An individual who is focused on ensuring safety and compliance, within the context of a customer focused business
Demonstrable knowledge of the UK legislations associated with Ionising Radiations (IRR17, REPPIR)
Relevant scientific and regulatory knowledge
Skilled and experienced in the art of synthesis, purification procedures and use of standard laboratory equipment
Strong knowledge of common Microsoft Office programs and knowledge of software associated with radioactivity lifecycle tracking
