Sensing Change is a team within the Adult and Community Services (ACS), Suffolk County Council. We provide a range of services to people with sight and/or hearing loss throughout Suffolk, which include Social Work and Assessment, Vision Rehabilitation and a Support Service. The aim of our service is to focus on early intervention and prevention, enabling individuals to maintain and increase their independence.
We are currently seeking a Qualified Vision Rehabilitation Worker to join our team and work directly with people with sight loss or dual sensory loss. The role is countywide with an office base at Endeavour House, Ipswich IP1 2BX.
Your role and responsibilities
You will
- assess, plan and deliver high-level independence skills, including orientation and mobility training to people with sight loss or dual sensory loss
- offer information, advice, guidance and support to enable people with sight loss to live as independently as possible
- balance needs and risk of individuals while focusing on promoting independence and positive outcomes
- to support individuals, carers and their families and work alongside colleagues within Sensing Change and ACS, as well as partner organisations when required.
- a Degree/BTEC Diploma in Rehabilitation Studies Level 5 (if you do not have a relevant qualification please take a look at ourVision Independence Practitionervacancy which may be more suitable to your experience)
- knowledge of Braille, Moon, Deaf-Blind Manual and other communication methods
- an understanding of accessible formats for people with sight loss
- good understanding and awareness of the emotional impact of sight loss
- to be able to identify risk and carry out effective risk assessments that promote independence
- knowledge of digital aids for daily living, communication, safety and mobility.
The team
Sensing Change is a well-established, dedicated and supportive team with lots of experience, enthusiasm and passion for promoting the needs of people with sight and/or hearing loss. We will nurture and develop your existing skills to focus on sensory needs and will provide training leading to qualifications in this interesting and specialist area of work. Travelling requirements for your role
