Job description
The software testing team at the University of Portsmouth is a small and growing team within Information Services, and is charged to use software testing tools and techniques to help our Stakeholders understand the quality of key digital solutions used across the university, within areas such as HR, Finance, Facilities Management, Marketing etc.
This is an exciting time to join the team, supporting the Test Manager and Senior Test Analysts in building out our capabilities. You would be working with the business and other Stakeholders to understand their needs and requirements, and then conducting meaningful software testing to ensure that key business systems are functionally fit and are of a high quality for users.
The successful candidate would work within the team to further enhance the tools and techniques we have at our disposal, and support the other test team members in their duties, contributing to presentations, documentation, code samples etc, to enable IT Services to meet the strategic aims of the University.
The successful candidate would contribute to the test planning and test estimating process, generate test cases based on verbal or written requirements, procure or create the test data for testing, then execute test cases - recording outcomes and contributing to quality metrics, then contribute to testing tear down and reporting.
The individual would provide continual input to the team in order to improve test process, to record defects discovered in testing following quality standards, contribute to working groups with the other areas of the IS department and the wider University to promote and improve the software quality functiona, nd maintain a personal and professional development programme as agreed with the line manager
This role would suit an experienced tester who has demonstrable testing knowledge and experience, particularly of manual testing, although hands-on experience of automated and performance testing would be desirable. The individual would have demonstrable practicable skills and abilities using testing tools, and possess a high level of analytical attention to detail. The individual would understand typical software development lifecycles, have good communication skills including the ability to describe complex technical solutions to technical and non-technical audiences.
An understanding of typical university information systems, such as Tribal SITS or MHR iTrent would be an advantage, and the role requires the individual to have a minimum of a HND, degree or professional qualifications in a relevant subject, or equivalent experience. ISEB qualification in software testing is also desirable.

The role is based in Portsmouth and requires the individual to be able to travel to work in the office, although we work a matrix system that includes working from home.
