Job description
Are you an experienced operational manager with a passion for animal welfare?
We have an exciting opportunity available at the largest animal welfare charity in the UK as an Animal Care Assistant. Every year the RSPCA takes in and cares for thousands of animals, from pets to wildlife and everything in between!
RSPCA Newport is a small centre that cares for various domestic animals such as dogs, cats and a selection of small furries like rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
We're recruiting an Animal Centre Manager to manage staff and volunteers to support our mission in providing rehabilitation for animals and finding their safe fur-ever homes by running a successful centre.
Our animals have been often rescued by our Inspectors and Animal Rescue Officers from neglect and cruelty. When they arrive at our centres some can be nervous of strangers or have little socialisation skills, and it's up to us to try and work out why and bring them round to trusting people again. We do this on a daily basis with a dedicated team that we're extremely proud of.
We're looking for a strong leader with excellent organisational and communication skills and demonstrable experience in staff and volunteer management, as well as budget management.
Here's some of the key work that you will be doing...
- Recruiting, training and managing staff and volunteers
- Overseeing the centre's finances by preparing annual budgets, monitoring spending, and seeking cost saving opportunities
- Taking responsibility for the health and safety of staff, volunteers and the general public visiting the animal centre
- Stock and contract management in conjunction with our Purchasing Department
- Ensuring animal welfare standards are maintained in accordance with RSPCA policy and procedures
- Ensuring all buildings, equipment, vehicles and grounds are adequately maintained and secure
- Collaborating with colleagues to ensure the effective running of the centre and coordination with other aspects of the RSPCA's work
- Sharing best practice with colleagues at other animal centres and collaborating to achieve common goals
- Maximising fundraising and income generation opportunities at the centre
- Maintaining positive public relations via social networks and media channels
- Ensuring all users both internal and external, including branches, receive excellent customer care
- To act as an escalation point for issues
- Maintain a long term marketing strategy using appropriate internal and media channels
- Liaison with the Inspectorate and local Private Boarding Establishments to help monitor welfare of animals and ensure efficient networking into centre, including where necessary visits to establishments
What we are looking for in you...
- Demonstrable and extensive supervisory and people management experience
- Experience of budgeting and financial management
- Experience of managing media and communications
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage and coordinate your work in accordance with RSPCA policy and procedures
- Excellent communication skills
- Happy and comfortable to work weekends and public holidays on a shift basis
- A full driving license
Whilst it is not essential that you have animal handling experience (though this would be a bonus!), it is important that you have a genuine passion and interest in animal welfare and the work of the RSPCA.
The work can be tough, both physically and emotionally, so you'll need to be compassionate and resilient. However, the work is extremely rewarding, and you'll be working with a friendly and dedicated team who role model our values!
Please ensure you fully demonstrate your skills, experience and how you meet the above requirements in your application form.
Why work for the RSPCA?
It's an exciting time to join us in the decade of our bicentenary as we focus on our Strategy to 2030. The RSPCA works 365 days a year, rescuing all animals of all types from abuse, neglect, and injury.
