Description
Simon & Schuster are looking for an enthusiastic apprentice with a keen interest in starting a career in the publishing industry to join their thriving Adult Fiction team. This is an exciting opportunity to get your first taste of the Publishing Industry and a chance to learn about how an independent publishing house operates.
- General admin tasks including using systems, printing, photocopying and mailings
- Providing editorial and administrative support and overseeing the smooth and timely publication of the titles on the list
- Assisting with organisation of book launches
- Attending meetings
- Overall support for the smooth running of the Fiction team
- Author support such as gifts and contractual copies
- Providing administrative support including diary management
- Generating and maintaining editorial data on our internal systems
- Ensuring books get to copyeditors, proof-readers, typesetters and authors on time
- Being a key point of contact between sales, marketing, publicity, art and editorial
- Processing and managing invoices
- Liaising with freelancers, generating and processing related paperwork
- Assisting with writing copy and briefing covers
- Creating/updating/checking our AIs
- Preparing prelims, end-matter and corrections for paperbacks/reprints/new editions
- Collating proof-readers’ and authors’ proof corrections when required
- General editorial research (looking up Nielsen Bookscan figures etc)
- Reading and reporting on submissions
- Regularly communicating with authors and their agents
- Contributing ideas for backlist reinvigoration
- Monitoring titles online and updating metadata
- You’ll need to attend an online Zoom screening interview with our Talent Team (don’t worry, we’re a friendly bunch!) and pass initial assessments in Maths and English.
- You will need to be within a commutable distance to the office location listed.
To meet the requirements of the Level 3 Publishing Assistant apprenticeship programme you will need to spend 6 hours a week of your time undertaking off-the-job learning, which will include:
- Formal training, including online learning and internal learning events
- 1-2-1s with your coach and line manager
- Observing and shadowing colleagues
- Writing up learning reflections for your portfolio
