Job description
This position is located in the Evaluation and Communications Research Unit, Office of the Under-Secretary-General, Department of Global Communications. The Evaluation and Communications Research Unit (ECRU) is mandated to provide the central evaluation function for the Department for the purpose of accountability and organizational learning. It also provides business intelligence and impact reports on the communications work of the Department. The incumbent reports to the Head of the Evaluation and Communications Research Unit.
Responsibilities- Gathers information from TalkWalker (an online media monitoring tool), social media platforms and online news websites. Helps to assess news value, reputational risk and other potential impact, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of information campaigns.
- Drafts daily and weekly insights reports as PowerPoint presentations on the activities of the Department.
- Prepares simple data visualizations including bar charts.
- Responds to ad hoc requests for talking points related to the immediate activities of the Under-Secretary-General.
- Builds analytics capacity with substantive Department sections including training, analysis, provision of dashboards and other assistance as needed.
- Keeps abreast of emerging issues and tonality affecting the United Nations, senior officials and priority issues.

A first-level degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in journalism, communications or a related field is required.
Work ExperienceA minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area or the successful completion of the Young Professionals ProgrammeExamination (YPP)/United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P) is required.
Experience in using media analytics tools, such as Talkwalker, and familiarity with Booleans (AND, OR, NOT, etc) is desirable.
Experience in building PowerPoint presentations is desirable.
Experience in interpreting trends in data, applying basic formulas such as SUM or AVERAGE and creating simple data visualizations (such as bar charts) using Excel is desirable.
Experience in analyzing Twitter usage and trends by general audiences is desirable.
Experience in monitoring global media landscape and interpreting the political leaning and editorial policy of publications is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Fluency in French, Spanish or Arabic is strongly desirable.
