Job description
The Essex Police Department is accepting applications/resumes for a full-time public safety dispatcher position. We currently serve three communities that, when combined, have over 30,000 residents and dispatch for two police departments, three fire departments and one ambulance service. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, the Internet and emergency operations systems. The selected candidate will have passed a background investigation. The position requires an individual willing to work in a fast-paced environment and who possesses a strong attention to detail. This is a union position.
Primary Position Functions:
- Use phone, radio & computer systems & software (training provided)
- Call taking for fire, ems and police
- Some paperwork/record keeping responsibilities
- Other duties as assigned to dispatch
Position Requirements:
- Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation that will be conducted on all qualified candidates.
- Must be able to multi-task under stress
- Must effectively and politely communicate with the public and staff
- Ability to read, write, use the phone, radio and computer systems
- Must agree to confidentiality agreement
- Must be able to successfully complete dispatch training and certification requirements
Base salary range, not including overtime and shift differentials, from $48,880-$87,214 with consideration given for prior experience. Candidates with previous police/fire/ems dispatching experience are preferred, but not required. Shift assignments are based on seniority.
