A brilliant opportunity for a Public Health Principal to join a shared Public Health team to lead on public mental health work, reporting to our Head of Public Health Programmes.
You’ll be based in Milton Keynes, but you’ll work across the three unitary authorities of Bedford Borough, Central Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes (BMK).
The Public Mental Health Team works with partners to improve the mental health and wellbeing of residents across the three authorities. Current priorities include leading ‘prevention’ and ‘promotion’ workstreams across the Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care System (BLMK ICS). This includes the development of a Suicide Prevention Strategy and Action Plan for BMK.
The team also drives partner engagement for the Prevention Concordat for Better Mental Health, with a focus on reducing stigma around mental health. Additional work areas include influencing community mental health transformation programmes and the development of mental health projects across BMK.
You’ll lead a small team and ensure that prevention is championed to improve mental wellbeing and reduce mental health inequalities. Experience of working in complex health and care systems and the ability to work strategically with partners is essential for this role. Experience in the mental health or suicide prevention field would be beneficial.

Role ResponsibilitiesAs the public mental health lead, the main duties of the role will be:
- Lead the strategic development and implementation of specialist public health programmes of work to support positive mental health and well-being that will contribute to improvements in mental health outcomes across Bedford Borough, Central Bedfordshire, and Milton Keynes.
- Influence all partners across the Integrated Care System (ICS) to develop initiatives and services in a way which aims to reduce health inequalities and improve the health and well-being of communities across Bedford Borough, Central Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes.
- Responsible for key areas of Public Health Mental Health programmes of work including the real time surveillance of suicides and suicide audit, suicide prevention, self-harm and bereavement support.
- Develop the Promotion and Prevention workstream as part of Department of Health and Social Care Major Conditions Strategy and the National 10-year Suicide Prevention Plan.
- Responsible for the Public Health Mental Health budget, ensuring that services, programmes, and projects are based on evidence, value for money and delivered on time and within budget, whilst ensuring that monthly finance forecasting is completed on time.
- Provide line management support to the Public Health Practitioner – Mental Health and the Public Health Project Support Officer working with the Mental Health team.
- Ability to think strategically and influence partners across the system.
