Jealott's Hill International Research Centre is situated in pleasant semi-rural surroundings between Bracknell and Maidenhead and is the place of work for approximately 800 Syngenta scientists and support staff. Jealott’s Hill is one of the main global research and development sites and key activities include discovery and research of novel chemical active ingredients, biocontrol products, formulation technologies, with related product safety and technical support of our product range and seeds research.

We are looking for a hardworking, motivated individual who is quick to learn and apply themselves to join our dynamic, collaborative and industrious protein production team. They would support the execution of production process capable of delivering multi gram quantities of the required protein(s). This role offers the opportunity for the successful candidate to gain hands on experience and knowledge in construct design, recombinant protein expression through to an array of downstream processing techniques that range from 1 mL to 100 L scale.
Role profile and expectations:
- Work as part of a protein production team providing gram quantities of purified recombinant protein to support Syngenta’s novel trait research and development projects
- Provide hands-on support during large-scale protein production campaigns
- Provide hands-on support during Downstream Processing method development and optimisation for purifying different recombinant proteins from E.coli and other microbes
- Learn and conduct the necessary analytical methods to validate final outputs meet defined specifications
- Provide hands-on support for implementation of automated screening platforms to support development work for the production process at scale
- Accurately record results to agreed company standards
- Prepare technical reports, present findings within project groups and be an active communicator within the wider Syngenta scientific community
- Work safely and with due care to others ensuring compliance with company HSE policies
Essential education & experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant science e.g. Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical or other similar disciplines
- Good theoretical understanding of recombinant protein expression
- Good theoretical understanding of chromatography techniques including affinity, ion exchange (IEX), hydrophobic interaction (HIC) and size exclusion (SEC) chromatography
- Strong evidence of troubleshooting and innovative problem solving
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good communication and planning skills
Desirable experience:
- Master’s degree or 1-2 years’ experience working in a laboratory environment
- 1-2 years lab experience working in any of the core areas highlighted in the above job description
- Experience with data management tools (e.g. Benchling) and data analysis software (e.g. JMP)
- Experience of working with scalable bioprocess technologies e.g. TFF, Hollow fibre
- Experience of working with bioreactors, any contact time with an Ambr250 microscale fermentation system would be considered a bonus
- Experience of working with a liquid handler for automated high-throughput screening methods e.g. Tecan
