About IWPR

The Institute for War & Peace Reporting (IWPR) is an international non-profit organisation founded in 1991, with charitable status in the US, UK and the Netherlands. We give voice to people at the frontlines of conflict, crisis and transition to help them drive change and build more stable, just and inclusive societies.

Drawing on three decades of experience in some of the world’s most challenging environments, we support media, civil society, democracy and governance, gender, and youth-focused projects in over 30 countries – promoting reliable information and responsible public debate and removing barriers to freedom of expression.

IWPR is seeking experienced freelance proposal writers to help develop winning proposals to be submitted to a range of international funders. Assignments will vary in duration but will typically last from four to eight weeks. Responsibilities will include working closely with IWPR programme and development staff during the project development phase, writing the proposal narrative, working with finance staff to develop the associated budget and budget narrative, and ensuring that proposal deadlines are met.

Successful applicants will enter into a pool of writers with IWPR, coordinated by the Global Director of Development, from which our in-house Business Development Team can request services.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of five years of experience working in international development together with a strong understanding of international development issues. Applicants must demonstrate familiarity with media development or civil society issues;
  • Previous success (as demonstrated by winning proposals) in submitting grant proposals to one or more government funders including US, UK, EU, Netherlands, Norway and Sweden required;
  • Responsible for delivering high quality, tailored content for proposals or related documents in full compliance with the requirements and quality standards of IWPR and its donors;
  • Experience with private foundations and trusts/corporations is an advantage;
  • The ability to write clearly and concisely and to balance technical rigor with simple explanations;
  • Effective verbal communication skills and ability to interact with all levels of staff in a professional manner;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines;
  • Excellent critical thinking skills and sound judgment. Proven willingness to make timely and sound decisions based on accurate judgment;
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-cultural, geographically dispersed team environment;
  • English language fluency required.

To apply for this opportunity, please submit:

  • Your CV (max 3 pages);
  • A letter of interest (max. 1 page) including details of your relevant experience, your availability and your expected daily fee rate;

Principals only. No calls please. Only those who have been considered for an interview will be contacted.

IWPR is an equal opportunities employer and positively encourages applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital status, veteran status or pregnancy and maternity.
