About the job
We are looking for a Project Engineer to join as a key member of the Technical Operations team, planning and coordinating software, hardware, facility and infrastructure projects to completion. This will include both day-to-day project management as well as medium and long term planning to achieve our ambitious growth targets. The focus of the role is to ensure that all OQC technical projects are effectively managed throughout their life-cycle implementing new processes and systems.
The Project Engineer will be able to handle multiple projects at the same time, in both hardware and infrastructure, to identify and implement the most people-friendly and cost-effective way to manage OQC projects, to negotiate and deliver within the time and budget constraints. You must be detail-oriented, anticipating and solving issues before they arise, showing a high-level of proactivity and autonomy, keeping the company’s management team regularly informed with clear reports, and a natural team player who excels in supporting teams through significant changes.
What you will be doing
- Interpret requirements, identify project risks, and address design parameters and engineering problems, ensuring solutions are implemented accurately and in budget.
- Provide technical support to external and internal customers.
- Resolve operational problems related to projects and minimise delays or unexpected cost increases.
- Responsible for project success whether project leader or as part of a project team.
- Ensure all relevant safety objectives and legal requirements are observed for all work completed.
- Oversee project workflow and support internal and external resources to ensure timely delivery of projects, expected quality, and allotted budget.
- Design of project installation spaces including site GAs and equipment specification.
- Create and manage a lean approach to project documentation whilst maintaining accurate and auditable records against quality standards.
- Support Global commissioning and installation of systems onsite and at customer facilities.
What you need to be successful as a Project Engineer
- Commercial Project Management/engineering experience
- Strong fundamental knowledge of mechanical/electronics/system engineering and its application in industrial electro-mechanical and scientific equipment.
- Excellent communication skills (oral, written and presentation), including the ability to actively listen.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and identify areas for improvement.
- Excellent proficiency with Google Suite and Project Management software (in particular ClickUp)
- Critical thinking with exceptional problem-solving skills, able to work independently or in a team environment.
- Efficiently organise and plan work tasks to meet company goals.
- Proactive, resourceful & highly motivated with the ability to work in a high output, fast paced environment.
- International travel as required to support projects.
Desirable qualifications
- Degree in an engineering discipline Mechanical/Electrical/Systems Engineering.
- A proven track record managing Government or Research Council-funded projects.
- Understanding of Project Management fundamentals would be an advantage, Agile, PRINCE 2, Six Sigma.
- Proficiency with a CAD/PLM system (preferably SolidWorks).

Location and travel
OQC’s office is located in Shinfield, Reading. There will be a requirement for occasional travel throughout the UK and elsewhere abroad for conferences, meetings and engineering visits.
