The Department and role purpose:
Durham University’s Department of Archaeology is one of the UK’s best Departments of Archaeology with an outstanding reputation for excellence in teaching, research and employability of our students. We are regularly ranked one of the top two Archaeology departments in the UK (e.g. Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, The Guardian University Guide 2023, Complete University Guide 2023) and one of the top ten globally (World University QS rankings 2023). Our expertise covers a broad chronological and geographical span, from the Palaeolithic to the present-day, and from South Asia to the Mediterranean, Europe and the British Isles. We have a range of cutting-edge laboratories, including well-developed facilities for DNA, isotopic and luminescence research, and are developing a range of lab-based commercial operations around our applied and scientific research expertise. The Department of Archaeology has an extensive commercial infrastructure and a network of heritage-sector collaborators. For further information on our current projects, research and teaching see www.dur.ac.uk/archaeology.
The role of Project Coordinator will support the EAMENA project within the Department. Archaeology is actively involved in a number of international heritage protection projects, which are brought together under the umbrella of the Durham Centre for Cultural Heritage Protection (DCCHP). A major component of this effort is the multi-institutional project Endangered Archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa (EAMENA). Supported by the Arcadia fund, the project uses satellite imagery to document at-risk heritage in a number of countries in the region. The Durham team is focused on Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, western Iran, and the Caucasus. With support from the Cultural Protection Fund of the British Council, the team also undertakes training and knowledge-exchange programmes designed to build skills in remote sensing and heritage documentation within regional heritage agencies. The primary responsibility of the postholder will be to deliver administrative and social media support for EAMENA and its associated projects, with a secondary role of supporting DCCHP. The post holder will work with academic and administrative colleagues to support a range of activities within EAMENA and DCCHP, including social media and promotional activities, and the production of communications materials.
Working Arrangements
At Durham, we recognise that our staff and students are our greatest asset and we want to support the health and wellbeing of all. Hybrid working supports this ethos and provides many benefits to our colleagues, including empowering people, where their role allows, to work in a manner which is more suitable for them, whilst encouraging our commitment to environmental sustainability.
Interviews are anticipated to take place in June 2023
