Duties
The Supervisory Program Manager is responsible for providing oversight of Exhibit Planning unit and teams at Smithsonian Institution Exhibits (SIE) involved in all aspects of exhibit planning, project management, exhibit and script development and writing/editing support of the mission.In this position, you will:Perform all major aspects of a supervisor, delegating managerial authority to set plans and schedules for projects. Determine goals and objectives for the project management and production team.

Serve as technical expert of medium and large exhibit design and production, establishing key timelines, milestones, and deliverables, while overseeing short and long-term projects.
Apply acquisition techniques and strategies for services outside of SIE, exercising a detailed awareness of technical oversight. and coordination to source project work.
Develop and issue, formal contracts for services with required documents needed to outsource. Manage and oversee quality of work, and timeline of deliverables.
Provide expertise in the exhibition process, and identify, and resolve technical issues. Analyze exhibition planning goals and recommend new policies and procedures for increase and impact.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Service.

For this position, specialized experience is defined as direct supervision of multiple project managers; managing complex museum exhibit production schedules, budgets, and teams; experience in contract development and oversight, managing milestones and meeting design and production deadlines; and experience in museum content research, script development and interpretive strategies.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

How You Will Be Evaluated
You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.Applicants for this position may be evaluated in multiple stages.   • Ability to oversee administrative and technical personnel responsible for developing and designing exhibits.
  • Ability to apply project management principles, concepts and practices for multiple exhibitions developed internally or externally.
  • Ability to develop and approve formal contract documents used to establish agreements for services and technical work from external vendors.
  • Ability to research and compile documents related to contracting and procurement.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance in exhibit development and key aspects of exhibition design, development and management..

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

  • Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job-related competencies above.
  • Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job-related competencies above.
  • Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements but does not satisfy most of the job-related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category.
