Historica Canada’s Program Assistant for the Memory Project Speakers Bureau will be an individual who has experience working with a team to achieve deliverables in a timely fashion. The successful candidate is a strong communicator, bilingual in French and English, and enthusiastic about sharing the stories of Canada’s veterans. The successful candidate is organized, results-oriented, and flexible. This position reports to the Program Manager.
Key Responsibilities of the Program Assistant:
- Assist with outreach to school boards, classrooms, libraries, community groups, and other potential partners to encourage them to book a speaker, via email and telephone;
- Book visit requests for classrooms, youth groups, community groups, etc., meeting nation-wide demand for volunteer speakers throughout the coordination of an extensive database of volunteers;
- Facilitate communication between visit organizers and speakers;
- Assist with research, image sourcing, script development, and production (with other staff) of Memory Project videos, learning tools, events, etc.;
- Work with the team to identify new outreach opportunities within the veteran community to encourage new veterans from various conflicts to become speakers;
- Develop Memory Project content for Historica Canada’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts;
- Work with Program Coordinator to promote the project through media relations, social media, and other forms of communication;
- Assist the team with creation and distribution of promotional materials, website updates, learning tools, speaker kits, video projects, and advertisements throughout the year;
- Support the team in the operations of the program;
- Maintain positive relationships with national volunteers and program partners;
- Other duties as assigned.
Key Skills, Knowledge, and Qualifications
- A degree in History or a related field (e.g., Classics, Public History, Museum Studies, Education, Film, Communications, English, etc.), or other relevant experience;
- Bilingualism (English and French) required;
- People skills and comfort on the phone required;
- Interest in and natural capacity for interacting with team members and external stakeholders, building trust, rapport, and collaborative communication;
- Team player and strong individual worker;
- Flexibility and adaptability to change;
- Copy editing and fact checking experience an asset (ideally in both languages);
- Excellent attention to detail in all aspects of work;
- Ability to build and maintain strong relationships in a hybrid/remote environment;
- Strong self-management skills, including time management and task prioritization, with the ability to proactively identify and problem solve to plan ahead within areas of responsibility (e.g., competing priorities, deadlines, standards of quality).
- Interest in and knowledge of Canadian history and culture.

Based on the results of the questionnaire, Historica Canada expects to invite 3-5 candidates to an initial interview via video call (approx. 1 hour). This interview will usually be with 2 Historica Canada staff. Some roles may require a short skills test, which would be provided following the interview.
Up to 2 candidates may be moved forward to a second interview with the President and Vice President of Operations and will later be asked to provide references.

This is a contract position beginning June 19, 2023, and ending March 31, 2026. The annual salary will be $42,000, less applicable statutory deductions, which will be paid to you twice a month.
