The Department of English in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto, St George campus, invites applications for a full-time tenure-stream appointment in the area of Creative Writing (prose) and Global Black Literature. The appointment will be at the rank of Professor and will begin on September 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter.

Applicants must have earned a PhD in English and have an established national and international reputation as a creative writer. The successful candidate must display evidence of excellence as a highly successful novelist, a critic, and as teacher of both creative writing and literature, as well as a record of excellence in research and/or creative professional activity. Evidence of excellence as a teacher should be demonstrated by a strong statement of teaching philosophy, excellent teaching evaluations, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing. A teaching dossier which includes these materials should be submitted as part of the application. Evidence of excellence as a novelist and critic, as well as in research and/or creative professional activity should be demonstrated by a record of sustained publications of an outstanding order in major presses and in other leading outlets, a record of significant awards and honours, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements by referees of international standing. The successful candidate is expected to be a creative writer at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded support program.

Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment, demonstrated through the application materials.
