DESCRIPTION:
Business Planning
  • Develop an annual action plan including strategies, activities and resources for the regional Packaging department that support brewery and National Packaging business goals; contribute to the development of the brewery vision in support of the overall department and Sleeman Vision, Mission and Values.
  • Identify operational issues with the potential to disrupt supply and work with the Corporate Technical function to develop plans to mitigate these risks
  • Contribute to the implementation of the food safety strategy
  • Support the new product development process as it relates to regional packaging

Budgeting and Financial Management
  • Develop and manage regional Packaging department budget and business plan to meet regional and national objectives
  • Provide full year regional packaging forecasted expenses vs. budget on a monthly basis as the year progresses
  • Provide input to the national capital expenditure process to determine funding allocation on a priority basis to meet both short and long term objectives for packaging

Standardize and Optimize Operations

  • Ensure a safe and healthy workplace and identify and correct unsafe practices. Work with Health and Safety to establish and implement new or revised processes, as necessary
  • Lead the regional implementation of packaging processes and procedures and ensure they are adhered to by providing regular feedback through process metrics and auditing
  • Conduct regular departmental performance review/audits to assess performance against standards and objectives; support team in identifying and implementing solutions to address performance gaps
  • Ensure metrics are in-place to track and monitor performance; work collaboratively with Corporate Operations to establish, implement, and standardize metrics; communicate key metrics to all department personnel; and implement corrective actions to address identified gaps
  • Ensure all policies and procedures are followed for quality, safety, and collective agreements and all regional packaging practices comply with related legislation
  • Maintain adherence to quality and food safety program standards to ensure food safety, quality and legal requirements are being met

Build a High Performing Team

  • Ensure KPOs for team are aligned with departmental and brewery business objectives; provide regular feedback and performance assessment; take action to address performance gaps
  • Participate and assist with creating a culture of continuous improvement focused on health and safety, quality, efficiency, customer service and cost
  • Provide ongoing mentoring to regional packaging team to improve performance
  • Role model Sleeman Breweries’ values in order to increase employee engagement and maximize employee performance
  • Create annual personal development plans for self and team; maintain current knowledge of the field
Requirements
  • Minimum of 7 years of food manufacturing experience in a high-speed packaging environment, including at least 3 years of management experience
  • Post-secondary education in Science, Engineering or related technical field
  • Experience working in a unionized environment
  • Knowledge of brewing industry considered an asset
  • Working knowledge of food safety and good manufacturing practices, HACCP and/or ISO standards of quality, quality assurance, project management, and financial management
  • Ability to prioritize and balance between short and long term plans within a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze high volumes of complex data and create insights
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal; ability to create reports and deliver presentations
  • Computer skills with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio); ability to use maintenance management software considered an asset
  • Working knowledge of Occupation Health and Safety Act and other related legislation/regulations
  • Acceptable criminal record check
  • Ability to demonstrate behaviours that support organizational values

Working Conditions
  • Spends approximately 50% of the time working in manufacturing environment and approximately 50% in an office environment
  • Travel may be required
  • Flexibility to respond to issues outside of working hours
  • Required to wear PPE while in manufacturing environment
