Who We Are:
The Modern Classrooms Project is a fast-growing nonprofit organization that empowers educators to build classrooms that respond to every student’s needs. Founded by two award-winning teachers, we lead a movement of educators in implementing a self-paced, mastery-based instructional model that leverages technology to foster human connection, authentic learning, and social-emotional growth.
To date, our free online course and Virtual Mentorship Program have empowered 60,000+ educators in 150+ countries. We’ve partnered with 200+ schools and districts to train and support both teachers and administrators, and researchers from Johns Hopkins University found “overwhelming positive support” for our approach. We are an ambitious, idealistic team and we are passionate about what we do.
Why We Need You:
The Modern Classrooms Project offers outstanding teacher professional development. For the past three-plus years, we’ve received consistently excellent reviews from the educators and administrators we serve. Our free online course and Virtual Mentorship Program have changed thousands of lives for good.
As these two programs have grown, so too have the opportunities for MCP to further meet educators’ needs through new initiatives. Should we build our own tech tools for teachers? Offer different programs for different types of educators? Open a demonstration school? And how can we use new technologies - particularly AI - to continue innovating in everything we offer? The opportunities can feel overwhelming. We’re not always sure where or how to start.
That’s where you come in. We need you to:
- Work closely with our staff and educators to understand their needs, dreams, and desires.
- Explore every possible avenue towards empowering our community and advancing our movement.
- Start building the products and services our educators need to succeed.
We want to empower educators in every way that we can. You’ll help us do that.
What You’ll Do:
You will report directly to Robert Barnett, MCP’s co-founder and Chief Program Officer. Robert developed the Modern Classroom model as a teacher in DC Public Schools, and has led the creation of all of MCP’s teacher-facing programs, including the free online course and Virtual Mentorship Program. Working closely with Robert, you will:
- Leverage qualitative and quantitative data, along with user interviews and insights generated by MCP’s Research Team, to develop a deep understanding of educators’ needs and desires.
- Ensure that MCP remains on the cutting edge of innovation, by exploring, sharing insights on, and testing new technologies that can advance MCP’s teacher-empowerment work.
- Propose, design, test, and refine new features, products, and services to meet educators’ needs, then work with MCP’s Program Operations team to bring these innovations to life.
You’ll spend your days thinking about what the future looks like, and then bringing it to life.
You Should Apply If:
- You are obsessed with user experience. You are constantly wondering why things are built the way they are, and you usually think you could design them better. You have an extremely high standard for the experiences you create, and sometimes that drives you a little bit crazy.
- You’re a builder. You welcome complaints but seek solutions. When you’re not sure if something will work, you create a prototype and find out. You currently have a list of more things that you’d like to create than time allows. You have a track record of building amazing things.
- You love ideas. Some people look at things that are and ask why; you dream of things that never were and ask why not. For any problem, you can think of several solutions. You seek inspiration everywhere and everywhere. Sometimes inspiration strikes and you just need to go write it down.
- You’re eager to learn. You relish the challenge of mastering a new platform or system, and using it to empower others. You’re fascinated by, critical of, and reasonably competent using AI. When you don’t know how to do something, you figure it out.
- You want to shape the world. You’re motivated to be part of something larger than yourself. You believe that the highest value of your talent is using it to empower others. You care about your legacy. You’re ready to make a real difference in educators’ and young people’s lives.
If everything above is true, you have incredible potential to change the way things work. We hope you’ll make MCP the place you do that.
Compensation and Benefits: We offer a competitive compensation package, as well as the opportunity to work in a fast-growing nonprofit that is on a mission to improve education worldwide. This includes:

- Employer-sponsored health insurance through CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield
- Participation in Vanguard 403(b) deferred-compensation plan
- Generous Paid Time Off policies
- Ability to work remotely and to set own hours (within reason)
