Job description
Job Title: Product Design Engineer
Primary Base: Bristol
Status: Permanent
Organisation profile
DEEP is accelerating deep sea exploration and preservation through the development of new technologies which enable humans to operate for longer periods of time underwater.
Our planet's oceans hold answers to some of the most significant challenges facing humanity today, and yet they are almost completely unknown and unexplored. Ocean exploration is extraordinarily difficult and expensive, and current technologies only enable humans to safely access these remote areas of the planet for minutes at a time, highly restricting research and understanding. At DEEP, our mission is to radically open up access to the oceans through pioneering new technologies. These will empower scientists and researchers to fully understand the impact of our current way of life on the oceans and find new ways for us to protect our seas, their inhabitants and ourselves.
We are an expert team of highly experienced engineers, explorers, and safety experts, with a funding model that allows us the freedom to think long term and pursue our mission without traditional restraints. We want to drive progress at the forefront of deepsea innovation and discovery to become stewards of the oceans and reshape our relationship with the planet.
Role profile
You will be working collaboratively with industrial designers, engineers, researchers, and human factors through to end-users such as divers or explorers to design products used in underwater technology.
The successful candidate will be a self-starting individual with experience of designing a range of high-quality products that do not compromise aesthetics. Ability to develop shape-keeping design intent and making user experience, functionality, and manufacturability main priorities. Please bring evidence of successful past work showing images showing process.
Projects will range from handheld to large scale products, some produced with cutting edge materials and process. Industrial design, vehicle, and/or architectural experience is a plus (especially yacht or marine).
This role is an opportunity to develop exciting unconventional products for a resourced and dynamic UK based company. You will be part a brand-new chapter in sub-sea ocean development, developing ideas from concepts to the factory floor!

- Participate in collaborative concept design initiatives.
- Development of robust industrial design and design engineering concepts.
- Sketches, prototypes, 3d cad, and visualizations to validate concepts and prove form
- Detailed design of products, equipment, components, fittings at production level detail and quality. E.g., cladding, controls, furniture, covers, mechanisms, or electronics
- Design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA).
- Review & analysis of build sequencing, materials selection, processes, and tolerances.
- Preparation of reports, drawings and documentation
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- Possess a minimum of a Batchelor's degree in Product Design or similar discipline
- 5+ years' experience of product design and engineering
