BBC Radio Drama’s Units in Birmingham and London are part of the wider Radio Drama UK community but come under the leadership of Head of Arts, Drama and Documentaries Radio.
Based in Birmingham, The Archers is the flagship Drama strand on Radio 4 and Britain’s longest running daily soap having begun transmission in January 1951.
Main ResponsibilitiesWe are looking to recruit a producer with a demonstrable passion for broadcasting to the nearly 5 million listeners who tune into to The Archers every week on Radio 4 & BBC Sounds, and who has a knowledge of the show and what it sets out to achieve – a dynamic and dramatic representation of life in rural England and the way we live now. Reporting to the Executive Editor, you will work as a member of the small dedicated team. Your focus will be across all aspects of the creative process of the programme, the; long and short term story planning and research, and particularly script editing and directing the show. You’ll also support the Executive Editor, the Content Editor and your Producer colleagues by sharing responsibility with them for a wide range of programme and production issues at this level. You must have an imaginative approach to programme ideas as well as a strong team sense with an ability to motivate and enthuse colleagues. Ideally you will have had previous producer and directing experience and/or script editor experience in radio or TV, a good knowledge of continuing drama or radio drama and above all a passion for The Archers.
