What Your Job Will Be Like

We have an exciting opportunity for an R&D Electronics/Process Engineer to join our compound semiconductor microelectronics team! We work in a highly collaborative teaming environment to develop new custom application specific components and circuits with direct, relevant impact to our national security mission. The selected candidate will get to lead and support fabrication activities enabling delivery to our customers utilizing our world-class microfabrication facilities.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Maintain baseline manufacturing processes used in the proof of device feasibility, and as appropriate, mature those processes into the low-variability, well-characterized and documented processes that may be required for qualified component delivery to our customers.
  • Perform full suite of microelectronic fabrication processes including metrology, photolithography, wet and dry etch, metal evaporation, electroplating, thin film deposition, wafer thinning, and dicing.
  • Lead process development efforts utilizing design of experiments methodologies for novel III-V and III-nitride device technology and/or continuous improvement activities for III-V and III-nitride production programs.
  • Organize work for technologists with a focus on safety by providing clearly written process documentation and operating procedures.
  • Coordinate with other process engineers, technicians, and equipment owners to deliver on negotiated project commitments and equipment ownership responsibilities.
  • Monitor the performance of established manufacturing processes using statistical process controls. Analyze data to evaluate process execution, identify opportunities for improvement and detect process excursions.

Due to the nature of the work, you will need the ability to spend at least 90% of your time in a cleanroom facility.

Salary Range

$88,600 - $172,300

  • Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering or relevant STEM field plus four (4) years’ experience or;
    • Master’s degree in the above
  • One (1) year of relevant educational/work experience in semiconductor processing cleanroom
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE L clearance

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with compound semiconductor (GaAs-, GaN- and/or InP-based) device fabrication, preferably in multiple process areas
  • Experience in Design of Experiments and Statistical Process Control used in low-volume or custom integrated circuit manufacturing
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment
  • Ability to analyze data and present results in a clear, concise, and understandable way
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and time management skills

About Our Team

The III-V Microelectronics Department is responsible for the research and technology foundation of Group III-V compound semiconductors within the Microsystems, Engineering, Science, and Applications Center that enables the creation, development and delivery of microelectronic components addressing performance, harsh-environment communication, sensing and control problems. We work throughout the Technology Readiness Level range from TRL1 (basic principles observed and reported) to TRL6 (representative of the deliverable demonstrated in relevant environments), and partner as appropriate to assure the delivery of qualified products to our customers. Our Department focus in working from TRL3 (key elements demonstrated analytically or experimentally) to TRL4/5 (key elements demonstrated in a controlled/relevant environment) offers value to customers interested in the feasibility of proposed microtechnology or microsystems integration solutions to their problems, and to customers who need a trusted partner or supplier to build and deliver on stated performance, size, weight, power and cost benefits relative to alternatives. Meeting project landmarks and delivery commitments are critical to success in our R&D business. Core Department capabilities include electronic modeling and simulation; epitaxial design, growth and characterization; rad-hard microelectronic device and circuit design, microfabrication, characterization, and reliability; and high-reliability microelectronic product design, characterization, and delivery for high-consequence system applications.

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
