Mativ & the Process Engineer Role
Mativ, a $3 Billion global specialty materials manufacturer with (48) facilities in four continents, has a Process Engineer role in its Quakertown, PA facility. This on-site role is a critical part of leading environmental health and safety improvements within the facility and reports directly to the Plant Manager. The successful candidate will have an advanced knowledge of safety engineering standards and requirements, strong interpersonal and influencing skills, with a passion for driving safety culture change.
Under nominal direction, the process engineer optimizes operational throughput, quality consistency, and product performance. They take a hands-on role running projects in tight collaboration with business, production, engineering, and maintenance colleagues. Projects vary from finding production process upset root causes and implementing corrective actions to developing entirely new processes and products. The process engineer brings a keen understanding of the physics and chemistry of goods handling, continuous production processes, process and attribute measurement, and how variability affects customer satisfaction. This position provides updates to the manager on the status of all projects and initiatives.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Troubleshoots production process problems and implements improvements using the scientific method. ‘Production process’ is end-to-end and includes raw materials manufacture, storage, and transport; the extrusion and winding conversion process; finished goods packaging and handling; and end-customer product consumption use cases.
- Collaborates with peer experts and customers to understand how Mativ adds value to the products we produce and could produce in the future.
- Manages projects from start to finish providing clear progress status and maintaining realistic schedule expectations. Periodically prepare status presentations using PowerPoint.
- Develop hypotheses and experimental procedures in collaboration with peer experts.
- Participates or leads in Process Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (PFMEA) in collaboration with site contributors; Participate in Root Cause investigations related to non-conforming product or out-of-control processes.
- Conducts experiments utilizing Design of Experiments (DoE), cause and effect correlation analysis, and limit testing techniques.
- Analyzes data using Excel and statistical software tools.
- Documents experiments in structured written test reports.
- Conducts and documents Installation qualification (IQ), operations qualification (OQ) and process qualification (PQ) of process machinery and equipment.
- Documents Standard Operating Conditions (SOC), setup best practices, and other operational procedures to enable operation standard work adherence.
- Collaborates with production and engineering teams to define, validate and standardize attribute and process input measurement methods and equipment.
- Provides troubleshooting support as necessary.
- Keeps up to date with relevant emerging technologies and equipment solutions. Proactively introduce improvement ideas.
- Participates in continuously improving Mativ’s safety culture with the goal of zero safety incidents.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- 3 years of experience in a process engineering role in a multiline manufacturing environment is required. Experienced working in a 24/7 manufacturing process environment.
- 3 years of experience pre-processing machine measurement data and applying time-shifted event analysis.
- Demonstrated ability applying Statistical Process Control (SPC) quality control systems; experienced using Minitab or similar.
- Demonstrated ability applying the scientific method using PDCA, A3 problem solving, DMAIC, or similar frameworks.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- Experienced in coating, slitting, winding of rolled media.
Education/Certifications
A Bachelor’s Degree in a Safety Science, Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene or a related discipline required, plus 1-3 years’ experience in process engineering and manufacturing operations or equivalent combination of education and experience.
