Job Summary
GKN’s Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton, Bristol is a £32m state of the art technology research and manufacturing process development facility which is a hub for world-class innovative technology for the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft. It includes a collaborative space for research and development with universities, the UK’s CATAPULT network and GKN Aerospace’s UK supply chain, to help strengthen aerospace technology and support the UK’s Industrial strategy. We are seeking to recruit a Principle Engineer with a strong background in aircraft Propulsion System Certification to help shape the future of flight. You will be responsible for the engagement with the certification authorities and certification planning within the CTO office for all future programs as well as engagement within Flight Clearance (PtF and/or E Conditions as appropriate). This is a very exciting and potentially career defining opportunity. You will be an integral member of a team that is embarking on a significant and challenging technology development projects developing cryogenically cooled hyperconducting hydrogen electric propulsion (H2GEAR) as well as liquid hydrogen fuel systems. You will in particular be involved in RM&S activities leading to flight demonstration of the aforementioned projects. All of these running projects are a major steppingstone towards achieving greener aviation thus helping protect our environment for future generations.

Job Responsibilities

Responsible for the certification planning and all certification activities for an innovative hydrogen propulsion and flight demonstration program reporting the Director New Air Vehicle Concepts and/or Head of Airworthiness (HoA) as appropriate.

Responsible for developing the flight clearances (PtF and E Conditions) for the flight demonstration programs, ensuring that all compliance documents are in place.

Propose and agree internally, as well as negotiate externally, MoC as well as LoI. Ensuring that all compliance documents are defined and managed under configuration control

Lead on behalf of the program the applicable content for the Certification Readiness Reviews and Flight Readiness Reviews as appropriate

Manage the relationships with the certification authorities, including developing and establishing contractual arrangement, e.g. TACs with EASA or others as appropriate

Manage regulatory engagement from system to component level testing including test witnessing

Anticipate and manage transversal technical and business issues, arbitrate between solutions considering all aspects: sustainability, reusability, optimisation, opportunity, schedule, quality, cost, risks, safety and performance

Support the recruitment, specification of roles and ensure the development of members of the team

Generate technical reports and presentations

Manage and develop requirements and specifications both internally and as part of appropriate international standard working groups

How You'll Contribute
To help us make a difference, you’ll bring your passion and talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:

Essential:
A Degree in Science or Engineering based subject

Experience in writing certification plans for aerospace propulsion systems (CS-E and/or 14CFR33).

Experience in propulsion certification programs

Experience of operation failure consequences and the historical precursors (when available) to rule making

Experience in associated international standards, design practices, certification requirements (and means of compliance) as well as in service issues

Desirable:
Experience in negotiate Special Conditions

Practical experience in hazard assessments including the bow-tie method

Experience in supporting regulatory witness tests, e.g. EMC, blade off etc

Experience in the developing Permits to Fly (PtF) and E Conditions

Experience in regulatory projects or working groups, e.g. EASA-CA Concerto project to reduce Certification lead time

Experience in the safety and/or regulatory impacts of cryogenic and hydrogen systems

Experience in certification of large category transport aircraft

Experience of ARP4754 and counterpart documents related to the development as well as in-service operation of complex systems

Experience with EASA, FAA,TCCA, ANAC, CAA-UK and/or CAA-NL a bonus

Experience in the development of FHA, FTA, FMEA, CCA etc, e.g. ISOGRAPH

Proficiency in RBE tools, e.g. DOORs.

An active member of one or more international standardization committees.
