An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and experienced Principal Embryologist with at least 5 years clinical experience to join one of the UK’s largest assisted conception clinics. The successful applicant will be in charge of a team of ten clinical embryologists and will be joining a group based at Old St Mary’s and also the University of Manchester, with a strong interest in research and service development. Current areas of active research include embryo culture and selection, blastocyst formation and surgical sperm retrieval service.

The Department has an active clinical and basic scientific research programme, under the direction of the Consultant Embryologist. This programme involves extensive collaboration with research groups in the University of Manchester and elsewhere, with interests in ovarian tissue cryopreservation, sperm function and early embryo development.

The candidate is required and lead on work streams related to expansion of activity in the lab and building new capacity and ways of working. You will also perform a range of administrative, diagnostic and support activities that are critical in delivering a high quality service and helping our patients achieve their dreams of a family.

The post holder has responsibility for supervising the day-to-day work of the Clinical Embryology laboratory in the Department of Reproductive Medicine and line managerial responsibility for the Embryology team.

The post holder will be responsible for evaluating and presenting the monthly, quarterly and annual laboratory KPIs, as well as presenting updates on the Unit’s single embryo transfer policy. The post holder will also evaluate, validate, monitor and present results arising from new service developments or equipment introduced into the IVF laboratory.

The post holder has a responsibility for direct patient care through the running of the clinical Embryology laboratory, which provides direct clinical treatment services to patients, including the creation of human embryos by IVF and their fate including storage or disposal.

The post holder is expected to apply scientific knowledge, skill and expertise at the required professional level for the full range of clinical embryology procedures in the provision of a high-quality service to patients. A high degree of individual physical skill and micro- manipulation is required to perform the embryo and gamete manipulations.

A high degree of competence and clinical experience is also required for analysis and decision-making regarding gamete and embryo quality.

The postholder is expected to be involved in appropriate research and will be responsible for co-ordinating research trials.

The work of the Department is regulated and licenced by UK statutory bodies including the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

The Department provides infertility treatment services to the North West Region of England, including In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), insemination with donor sperm (DI), cryopreservation of sperm, embryos and ovarian tissue, banking of semen prior to cancer treatment, surgical sperm retrieval including micro-TESE and provision of donated sperm, eggs and embryos.

The Department provides a national and international lead in clinical and research areas including tissue cryopreservation, research into human embryo development and derivation of embryonic stem cells at Tissue Banking/Good Manufacturing Practice standards.
