Job Description
Job Title: Schools Chaplain at Gunnerside/Reeth, Melsonby/North Cowton and Richmond Methodist Primary Schools
Normal Place of Work: To be negotiated as one of Gunnerside, Melsonby or Richmond.
Accountable to: Superintendent Minister, North Yorkshire Dales Methodist Circuit
Accountable for: Not Applicable
Main Purpose of Post: Support the senior school leadership teams in developing and furthering their distinctive Methodist character and pastorally support the wider school communities (staff and families).
Safeguarding: The successful candidate will be subject to safeguarding checks, including an enhanced DBS, and candidates should be aware that it is an offence to apply if barred from working with young people.
Main Terms and Conditions: Salary : £18,079 per annum, based on £13.75/hour for 30 hours per week, term-time only (with salary paid proportionately across the full year). Paid annual leave of 5.6 weeks per year, ideally to be taken during school holidays. Employer pension contribution in accordance with Workplace Pension regulations. This is a 5 year post.
Principal duties and responsibilities:
Worship
- To contribute to the planning and delivery of collective worship
- To work in partnership with the senior staff teams in shaping the collective worship program and to regularly lead the worship
- To explore and develop with school and church colleagues the opportunities for worship additional to the corporate acts for all students
- To develop opportunities for students to understand worship and be able to participate when they wish.
Supporting the needs of the School Community
- To be available to all of school community – students, staff, parents, governors and beyond in a pastoral capacity, always within appropriate safeguarding guidelines.
- To be available at challenging times within the schools, to offer pastoral support to all involved and/or an external voice where appropriate.
- To develop and support extra-curricular activities during lunchtime and after-school as appropriate to the students’ spiritual needs.
- To participate in out of school activities such as school trips and residentials
- To provide relevant input to lessons in relation to this role
- To support Year 6 children in their transition to secondary education by providing relevant resilience-building activities.
- Support well-being activities and mental-health awareness activities across the schools.
Methodist Values
- To work with the school leadership in ensuring the distinctive Methodist character of the school
- To attend school leadership meetings, when relevant.
- To strengthen links with other primary schools and the various churches/faith groups within the local areas (connexion).
- This role is carried out in partnership with the wider Methodist Church and as such the School Chaplain will be a part of the North Yorkshire Dales Circuit staff team and included in their meetings and fellowship. They will also have a support group consisting of members of both the North Yorkshire Dales and Darlington & Teesdale
Circuits and Circuit Leadership Teams so that those individuals can feedback to theirCLTs and Circuit Meetings, with an invitation to the school Chaplain to attend any of these other meetings but with no requirement to do so.
Continuing Professional Development
- To meet regularly with line manager and, separately, support group/mentor.
- To take up opportunities for training and professional development in relation to role and understanding the schools’ contexts.
