Job Description:
Job title: Junior Pricing Analyst
Reports to: Head of European Pricing and Structuring

European Pricing and Structuring Desk
The desk is part of the Front Office with a direct reporting line to the CCO. It sits alongside the origination and trading teams providing wide structuring, valuation, and deal approval support for various business initiatives. We also support management and traders with live deal management including booking representations and risk management.
The function covers market derivatives and bespoke virtual and asset-based structures on all commodities traded by EDFT and its affiliates in liquid and illiquid horizons.
The function work closely with middle office and control functions with the goal of executing profitable deals that meet the company’s required rate of return, capital utilisation criteria, in compliance with EDF group risk policies.
Position purpose
This is a Junior Pricing Analyst role with the main responsibility of valuing flow and complex commodity deal structures in the energy markets. This involves:
  • understanding of commercial terms of deals including financial derivatives and real options
  • defining complete deal payoffs, formulating a problem, and proposing an appropriate valuation approach
  • carrying out analysis and developing appropriate tools/models
  • pricing and informing on the results in the context of a trading/deal management strategy
  • presenting the results in a structured manner to your manager or internal customers
Other duties and responsibilities as may arise and may be assigned by Management, this may include bespoke analysis, tool/model development for special projects, and development of library, user interfaces and data infrastructure.
Main Responsibilities
To support Origination team in structuring, valuation, approvals and execution of deals which maximise EBIT and minimise non-market risk exposure.
To provide high standard analytics and valuation services in support of execution of EDFT’s business strategy and growth ambitions, in the areas of:
  • Structured flexibility products
  • Global gas and oil flow hedging
  • Emissions and Green Fuels
  • Renewable generation hedging
  • EDF risk management service including facilitation of group hedging and optimisation of LNG, storages, power generation assets or liquidity products
To develop and enhance mathematical pricing models and analytical tools to support data processing, valuation, risk management and trading, optimisation and cashflow modelling.
To foster growth and efficiency within the team, keep relevant in our business knowledge and technical competencies to ensure high standards and service continuity
To keep active and collaborative relationship with other teams to improve productivity and processes, enhance our systems capabilities and champion innovation with the use of automation where appropriate.
Candidate Profile
This role is a junior role within an existing team and may suit someone at the early stages of their career looking to specialise in pricing and structuring. However, internship level experience in a similar role in a commodity trading firm is welcomed due to specific nature of the energy sector.
The role would be best suited for an individual with a strong applied quantitative background and technical (programming) skills with commercial mindset.
The candidate would offer:
  • Commercial mindset with understanding of financial metrics, NPV and returns.
  • Interest in the energy sector and understanding of energy market fundamentals and physical constraints.
  • Understanding of risk, both hedge-able risk and residual risks in structured contracts, and developing a practical approach to valuation issues
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse deal terms, identify underlying risk components/value drivers and formulating a complete deal payoff
  • Good understanding of derivative instruments coupled with understanding of valuation and risk analysis methods
  • Strong modelling skills
Example deal types dealt with by the group include forwards, futures, swaps, vanilla options, gas storage, swing, interconnectors, virtual power plants, renewables off-takes, and prepayment structures.
Technical Skills
Required technical experience and knowledge includes:
  • Degree level education in a highly quantitative subject (for example quantitative finance, mathematics, natural sciences, engineering). Masters level qualifications or equivalent work experience are desirable.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mathematics applied to energy commodities.
  • Knowledge of pricing algorithms, calibration methods and statistics.
  • Knowledge of energy sector and its latest developments
  • Excellent computer programming skills (Python, MATLAB, VB). Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office
Personal skills
It is a multifaceted role, which not only requires commercial and quantitative skills but also communication and client facing skills. The candidate would be responsible for liaising with originators and traders as well as regularly interacting with other pricing team members, risk management, product control, credit, treasury and legal teams.
  • Determination and commitment to delivering the top-class pricing service
  • Diligence, work ownership, pragmatism and high degree of autonomy in solving problems is required.
  • Notion of accountability for one’s deliverables.
  • Strong influencing skills would be an advantage.
  • Active interest in developing understanding of energy markets and their dynamics, alternative modelling methods, and applying this knowledge to real world transactions’ valuation
  • Ability to communicate complex issues in an understandable manner to traders, sales and management
  • Comfortable with working to deadlines in a fast paced environment
  • Excellent team player
