In a nutshell

The Practice Manager is a people focussed role, which supports and manages colleagues through their development, performance and everything needed to maximise their contribution to the success of IT & Change.


What you need to do

  • Lead and Practice manage up to 30 technical colleagues, to support the leadership team deliver both the operational, and colleague-centred needs
  • Accountable for ensuring all new recruits are onboarded and inducted consistently, in line with policy and ensures they are set up for success
  • Lead the performance management process and activities, ensuring the team has a culture of robust performance management and the team are both challenged and supported
  • Identify and facilitate development opportunities within the practice, including matching colleagues to opportunities, roles and assignments based on their development needs as well as their expertise
  • Accountable for developing and maintaining a skills/competency matrix which offers colleagues transparent career pathways and a framework to assess and evidence competency in role
  • Facilitating knowledge transfer; moving SBAFS Change and Technology from being a consumer of short-term knowledge to an industry standard capability, capable of meeting evolving and flexible strategic needs
  • Partner with Delivery and Portfolio PMO in creating a holistic view of the function’s capacity, supply and demand to support Change Delivery and projects.
  • Maintain and nurture stakeholder relationships with HR, with special focus on HR Talent Partners and their processes. Is the translator of Group and SBAFS HR policy into practical application for their team
  • Be an advocate and role model of the FS People strategy, be an early adopter of new initiatives and approaches to colleague development and management
  • Works collaboratively with other Practice Managers to achieve consistency of colleague experience where appropriate, avoids duplication of effort and shares best practice
  • Capitalises on an natural charismatic open and engaging people leadership style; influences through a nurturing, coaching and empowering style underpinned by the unswerving drive to achieve

What you need to know and show

  • Ability to energetically and enthusiastically lead and motivate staff to achieve in a changing and challenging environment
  • Ability to identify the right skills/person for the job; define skills gaps and coach and mentor staff through their development and career path
  • Clear straightforward and regular communication of functional and colleague centric goals and effective high performance management
  • Leverages industry specific knowledge preferably in a retail banking environment and translates it into how to get the best out of every individual and manage them to their highest potential
  • Likely to be value and behaviours driven; an exemplar of integrity, energy and relating to colleagues as individuals, gaining their trust and respect quickly
  • Excellent communicator, you lead through an open and engaging style, taking colleagues with you towards a high performance culture
  • Demonstrable understanding of the change lifecycle, key inputs and outcomes, challenges, risks, threats and opportunities having performed a practice manager or people leadership role within this context
  • Expert in performance management, never shying away from giving feedback with clarity, empathy and proficiency
  • Significant experience in identifying, interviewing and recruiting talent to meet SBAFS culture and needs
  • Creates a positive working environment where a collaborative team is rewarded over silo’d working to create the future state IT & Change culture.
  • Excellent presentation skills both written and in person, and comfortable presenting key messages in front of a large audience
  • Natural people leader who can take teams and stakeholders on the change journey, sometimes when the destination is still unclear; creates confidence, security and a positive working environment whilst priorities change
