We are looking for at least 2 promising early-career researchers in high-pressure laboratory experiments and numerical modelling to explore the transport properties of Earth and planetary interiors. The position is for a 2 years duration (with possible extension) Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions at University of Edinburgh.

The Opportunity:

We are looking for at least two postdoctoral researchers with backgrounds in high pressure experiments and/or experience in computational modelling.

The postdocs will investigate the transport properties of planetary interiors via high pressure experimental research.

The experiments use static compression techniques to perform thermal conductivity and viscosity measurements on metals and minerals. This work combines a variety of experimental methods, and various backgrounds can fit into our team. Experience in static or dynamic compression and synchrotron and free electron laser techniques is desired.

Computational modelling is primarily based on Finite Element Analysis, though other backgrounds in theory and numerical modelling can fit with our team, including modelling of geophysical systems and relevant technological systems.

The purpose of these positions is to carry out and interpret measurements of transport in geophysical materials at extreme pressures and temperatures. This will be achieved using experimental measurements, numerical modelling, and geophysical analysis.

The posts are funded by the European Research Council and will be based at University of Edinburgh in the Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions, though international travel will be routinely performed.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • Ability to conduct high pressure experimental measurements.

and/or

  • Ability to use numerical techniques for experimental design, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Experience directly relevant to project scope (specify in cover letter).
  • Ability to work independently within a team of researchers from different fields.
  • Publication of original research in peer-reviewed journals.
