Bring valid state or military identification. Immediately after check-in, head to designated location for the written examination. Applicants passing the written examination with a minimum raw score of 70 will then be administered a physical agility test, on site. Military applicants will be awarded 5 additional points to their final score on the written examination. Bring a copy of your DD-214. The basic physical tests will be demonstrated and will consist of: Warm up and stretching (5 mins.) 25 Military form pushups (1 min.) 30 Standard form setups (1 min.) 1.25 mile run (13 mins. 15 secs.) Upon hire, qualifying applicants who are not TCOLE Certified will be paid full time as a Cadet, $66,500.00, receive benefits and are provided a transport vehicle while attending the Police Academy. Upon completion of the Police Academy and state licensing, the starting officer salary is $68,162.50. Officer top out pay is 4 steps at $87,825.58. (If you have a GED, then you must have completed at least 12 hours at an institution of higher If applicable, an honorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces is required. Must be able to work rotating shifts including weekends. Must be eligible for certification from TCOLE (Texas Commission on Law Enforcement). Applicants must possess a valid driver's license with no more than two at fault crashes in the (60) months preceding the date of application. No more than one conviction of a moving violation within (60) months. No more than three moving violations convictions within 10 years. No license suspension in the last seven years. Out of town applicants, may apply, but must obtain a Texas driver's license upon employment with the City. TCOLE Requirements Have never been on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years from the date of the court order. Is not currently charged with any criminal offense for which conviction would be a bar to licensure. Has never been convicted of an offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years. Has never been convicted or placed on community supervision in any court of an offense involving family violence as defined under Chapter 71, Texas Family Code. Is not prohibited by state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle. Is not prohibited by state or federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition. Yes, anything higher than a Class C conviction will disqualify you. 5. When will I start the police academy? That will not be determined until you have been offered a job. 6. Do you recognize other states police officer certifications? Yes, TCOLE will allow you to challenge the Texas test without attending the academy all over again. We will prepare you for that if hired. This does take some time, so it would help to contact TCOLE and start the paperwork ASAP. 7. Do you offer a study guide for the written test? And, what is the test over? No, the written test is comprised of basic reading, writing and arithmetic skills. 8. What is the age limit? Local Government Code 143 requires that you be at least 21 years old and eligible to be licensed by the state of Texas and the age cutoff is 44 years old. 10. How long is the hiring process? Approximately 2 months. 11. What is your work schedule? Entry Level Police work 12-hour shifts, Sunday-Tuesday or Wednesday-Friday and every other Saturday, Days or Nights. 12. Do I have to have a College degree? No, but you will need a High School Diploma. A GED is accepted with a minimum of 12 hours from an accredited university. 13. What is the process? Visible tattoos on the ears, neck, head or face area are prohibited. Officers with tattoos/branding may be required to cover them if they are unsightly, profane or deemed inappropriate by the Chief of Police or his designee. 18. What is your facial hair policy? Beards, goatees and certain facial hair are allowed, but are governed by a written policy. A well-groomed beard/goatee is permitted, in compliance with policy.
