Role Overview
Governance is essential part in ensuring that we have a co-ordinated and streamlined approach to project management. Reporting directly to Head of PMO, the primary focus of the role is to manage the day to day aspects of project governance in Real Estate such as reporting, change control and risk management as well as supporting junior members of the team in their roles.
The PMO Lead will help to create a governance centre of excellence within the Real Estate team by training and raising the standards of governance within the team
Based in London the successful candidate will be great team player, able to work with demanding key stakeholders as well as being instrumental in working with a large virtual teams across a challenging, complex and growing business.
Key Accountabilities
- Contribute to the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of an effective corporate governance system.
- Coordinate risk management activities for our major construction projects.
- Identify and address issues with governance processes, seeking improvements and efficiency while balancing risk and transparency.
- Conduct investigations to determine the root cause of compliance problems and ensure adherence to internal policies and regulations.
- Manage the PMO repository, ensuring policies and procedures are up to date.
- Design and manage control systems to handle compliance and violations.
- Develop a training program to promote a cultural change around governance within the Major Builds teams.
- Oversee the preparation of reports, utilizing tools like Power BI, to provide powerful governance metrics for senior management decision-making.
- Build and maintain relationships with senior leadership, key stakeholders, and project delivery teams.
- Act as a second line of defense, questioning and challenging project managers on cost, schedule, and risk aspects.
- Coach and support junior team members.
- Collaborate with other departments, particularly finance and procurement, on governance matters.
- Manage audits on behalf of Real Estate, ensuring timely completion and providing assurance to stakeholders.
Skills & Experience You bring
- Proven experience as a PMO Manager or PMO Lead, with Construction industry-specific knowledge.
- Deep understanding of risk management, governance, and practical experience applying these principles.
- Practical experience in creating and implementing good practices for governance, compliance, and policy.
- Ability to manage varying workloads, prioritize tasks, and handle conflicting priorities.
- Demonstrated experience working in a team environment and influencing matrix teams, both virtually and directly.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Excellent negotiation and influencing skills, internally and externally.
- Experience interacting with C-suite managers and building strong relationships.
- Proficiency in leading virtual, multifunctional teams and delivering governance strategies.
- Strong executional skills and a track record of effective management.
- Degree-level education in Business, Real Estate, Procurement, Commercial, Construction, or Finance.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, including working with C-level stakeholders across different locations.
- Ability to navigate ambiguity effectively.
- Excellent communication, presentation, planning, and organizational skills.
- Self-starter with the ability to set clear goals and expectations for self and team members.
- Flexibility to travel at short notice.
