The role
Pilot cutter skipper/Port operative. Working as part of the marine team reporting to the Marine Team Leader and the Harbour Master. The pilot cutter skipper will operate the pilot cutter vessel to safely board and land pilots in The Wash, Boston, UK.
The pilot boats are based in the Port of Boston, UK.
Responsibilities
- Operation of the pilot cutter vessel & other marine craft
- Working on board the pilot cutter & other marine craft as deckhand
- Safe boarding and landing of Marine Pilots to and from commercial vessels
- General maintenance and upkeep of marine craft
- Ensuring safe operations are always conducted
- Assisting with lock gate operations
- Mooring of vessels
- Watering of vessels & bunkering of marine craft
- Ensuring annual certification requirements are met for marine craft
- Undertaking & recording pre use checks and reporting any deficiencies
- Operation of VHF radio, chart plotter & radar particularly in reduced visibility conditions
- Undertaking of hydrographic surveys
- Generation of tide reports & emailing them
- Complete any relevant training as required
Successful candidates will have twin engine boat handling experience and have, as a minimum, commercially endorsed RYA Coastal Skipper or Advanced Powerboat Certificate, or Under 16.5m Fishing Vessel Certificate. Inductions and onboard training will be given.
Working hours
- 14 days on, 7 days off (7 days skipper, 7 days deckhand, 6 days off, 1 day paid holiday)
- The daily schedule for the 2 weeks on is split into 2 x 4-hour tidal shifts with the commencement of each shift moving forward approx. 25 minutes each tide
- Potential to work as a port operative during week off at a port operative overtime rate

Required skills, qualifications & experience
- 3 years boat handling experience
- RYA or similar certification
- Proactive attitude towards Health & Safety
- Ability to pass a Seafarers medical – ENG-1 or ML5
- Ability to pass Personal Survival techniques training
- First Aid certification or willing to undertake
- Be able to work in all types of adverse weather conditions
- Understand the complexity of tidal working 24/7 365 days a year
- Computer literate including working knowledge of Office 365
- Right to work in UK
- Able to speak, read and write in English fluently
Desirable skills & qualifications
- Full UK driving licence
- Health & Safety qualification such as IOSH – working/managing safely
- Basic firefighting qualifications
- Familiarisation with operation of VHF radio, chart plotter & radar
- Familiarisation & knowledge of the Port Marine Safety Code
