Job description
- The post holder will work as an integral and active part of the adult Cystic Fibrosis Physiotherapy and multi-disciplinary team.
- The post holder will assist in the provision of inpatient and outpatient care to patients, supported and supervised by a senior physiotherapist.
- The post holder will carry out clinical tasks (such as supervision of daily individual exercise or airway clearance programmes), delegated by qualified staff, requiring a wide range of technical ability, as well as an excellent level of interpersonal skills.
- The post holder will carry out clinical assessments independently such as lung spirometry, exercise testing and oxygen saturation/heart rate recordings, with interpretation of these for safely exercising patients.
- To gain the required knowledge and skills in the relevant technical and clinical procedures, and to maintain those skills working under the Clinical Assistant Competency programme under the supervision of Specialist and Senior CF Physiotherapists.
- The post holder will carry out assessments for patients post discharge from hospital and feedback these assessments at multi-disciplinary meetings.
- The post holder will continue individualised exercise programmes with inpatients and outpatients, and progress and review these as appropriate.
- The post holder will participate in the physiotherapy assistant weekend service once competencies are obtained in airway clearance and long-term rehabilitation.
- To work as a core member of the Trust’s adult Cystic Fibrosis Physiotherapy Team.
- To work effectively within the Trust’s Adult CF Multidisciplinary Team.
- To perform complex aspects of patient care in the hospital, with direct and indirect supervision such as carrying out exercise testing and daily supervised patient exercise or airway clearance sessions.
- To perform complex aspects of assessment and patient care which may be in the hospital, out-patient clinic, virtually or occasionally in the patient’s home (if required to meet service needs)
- To be responsible for performing given tasks and reporting any concerns to the Specialist Physiotherapist or appropriate member of the clinical team through daily feedback.
- To perform clinical assessment procedures with patients in their own home, without any direct supervision e.g lung function (spirometry) if required to meet service needs.
- To be aware of and adhere to the Trust policies and procedures.
- To be aware of and adhere to local policies and procedures.
- To provide programmes of activity that have a therapeutic basis following framework guidelines laid down by the Specialist Physiotherapists.
- Awareness of safe practise and the need for onward referral, particularly when carrying out exercise testing and exercise programmes.
Educational objectives
- To gain the required knowledge and skills in the relevant technical and clinical procedures, and to maintain those skills working under the Clinical Assistant Competency programme under the supervision of Specialist and Senior CF Physiotherapists.
- To develop and maintain knowledge of the speciality of cystic fibrosis, particularly around exercise physiology and exercise training.
- To continue to gain practical knowledge that will support the delivery of face-to-face and virtual care to this particular group of patients.
- To support the day-to-day running of the Adult CF Physiotherapy Team.
- To maintain awareness of safe practise and the need for onward referral, particularly when lone working.
- To take responsibility for the organisation of the Physiotherapy home nebuliser scheme (eflows and Inebs) for adult CF ensuring patients have appropriate equipment and up to date guidance regarding cleaning and infection control.
- To undertake patient related administration tasks such as, booking patient appointments, booking patient transport, organising outpatient appointments for Specialist CF Physiotherapists.
- To take responsibility for activity data entry for own practice activity (data required for CQUINs)
- To assist in the development of information and resources for patients and their families, particularly around exercise for CF.
- To liaise with Specialist physiotherapists re exercise testing and provision of individual exercise programmes for in-patients, and liaison re follow-up at home by the post-holder.
- To maintain an efficient and accurate record system.
- To use IT skills, collating input, maintaining patient database, and accessing patient data as required.
- Adhere to departmental and directorate procedures for the use of supplies and equipment in order to promote the effective and efficient use of resources.
- Assist in the restocking of supplies and maintenance of equipment as directed by a senior physiotherapist.
- Participate in the Trust’s appraisal and personal development plan schemes by meeting with the manager annually.
- To maintain good and safe practise when handling specimens such as blood, sputum – accurate labelling, safe handling, recording, and to ensure accurate reporting
- Demonstrate a courteous and helpful approach to staff, patients, and their families, ensuring patients feel reassured and supported.
- Carry out assigned administrative tasks as directed by a senior physiotherapist.
- Take patient phone calls and seek advice from CF specialist physiotherapists when appropriate, and to use reassurance skills that require tact and persuasion on occasions.
- Report untoward incidents and any other relevant information to a Specialist Physiotherapist immediately.
- Inform a physiotherapist if asked to carry out a task that the individual does not have the training or capacity to do.
- Promote the corporate image of the Trust to all individuals, groups and organisations, both within the Trust and externally to the community at large.
- Participate fully as a team member, sharing knowledge and information and supporting colleagues, to promote a cohesive team.
- To practise within the lone working policy, when visiting and assessing patients in their own homes if required to do so for service needs.
- To participate in research, audit, and quality improvement programmes for adults with Cystic Fibrosis working with the adult CF Physiotherapy team.
- Undertake relevant training for electronic information systems in place and under development.
- Use relevant IT systems in the support of patient care, including activity and equipment provision records and patient notes.
- To undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade as requested.
