- To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including an identified caseload of patients.
- To undertake a comprehensive advanced assessment of patients including those with diverse or complex presentations/multi-pathologies; use advanced clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques eg auscultation/palpation to provide an accurate diagnosis of their condition.
- Act independently to formulate, implement, evaluate and deliver an individual physiotherapy treatment programme based on a sound knowledge of evidence-based practice and treatment options eg manual physiotherapy techniques, patient education, gait re-education, electrotherapy techniques, acupuncture and other alternative options.
- Formulate accurate prognoses, recommend best course of intervention, including when results of examination and assessment may be contradictory and develop comprehensive discharge plans.
- Use of manual physiotherapy techniques including facilitation of movement and manipulation techniques. A skilled level of dexterity, sensory, co-ordination skills and precision are essential in treatment techniques eg suctioning of secretions from chest, manual therapy, acupuncture needling, vaginal examinations.
- Assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid consent and have the knowledge and ability to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
- Evaluate patient progress, reassess and adapt treatment programmes if required.
- To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to patients, relatives, carers and other professionals to promote and facilitate understanding of aims of physiotherapy input, thereby ensuring consistent patient care.
- To be responsible for organising and planning own caseload to meet service and patient priorities. Readjusting plans as situations change/arise using appropriate clinical prioritisation skills.
- To identify and manage clinical risk within own patient caseload, and may monitor others ie less experienced physiotherapist, assistants and technical instructors.
- To work as a lone practitioner (ie the sole physiotherapist) in the domiciliary and community settings ie patients' homes. To participate in emergency duty and weekend rota, There will be an expectation to provide services over 7 days, including weekends, public holidays and extended hours, where required, to meet the need of services.
- May be required to write legal reports, providing accurate and detailed information regarding patient’s diagnosis, treatment and expected outcome.
- Work multi-professionally with consultants, nurses, GPs and other health care professionals and agencies. This may be one to one discussions, report writing and team meetings etc. This will include discussion of patient care, patient progress and involvement in discharge planning/onward referral.
- To provide recommendations for ongoing physiotherapy input for patients to physiotherapy departments within and outwith the acute setting eg other wards/hospital, community teams.
- To provide recommendations for patient care to multidisciplinary community professionals (including care managers, care agencies, district nurses, community therapists) regarding patient’s safe mobility, use of orthoses, prescribed postural management and maintenance exercise programmes.
- To suggest recommendations to the physiotherapist managing the service area or other lead clinician for changes to practice by the team. May lead the implementation of specific changes to practice or contribute to service protocols.
- Advise, teach or instruct, as appropriate, other health professionals and social agencies, patients, relatives and carers.
- May be required to undertake visits to patient's home from hospital with other health/social staff with a view to discharge patients home.
- To provide assistance when required to provide cover to other areas of the physiotherapy service eg other wards/specialties, domiciliary, etc.
- To undertake additional delegated responsibilities for the department eg Manual Handler, CPR trainer, Clinical Effectiveness Representative etc.
- To comply with all LBI policies on patient confidentiality and data protection.
