Job overview

We are looking for a new colleague to join our high performing, friendly and dedicated medical team as Specialist in Emergency Medicine.

Joining our senior tier, you will be a team player with very good clinical, communication and leadership skills and a primary focus on quality patient care. You must be committed to supporting education, research and prevention / health improvement which are fundamental to our plans. Successful candidates will have access to a senior mentor, and will be supported with time to develop special interests, aligned to departmental strategy.

The post will be based at the Emergency Department of Nottingham University Hospitals which is on the QMC Campus. We are the front door for the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre (Adult and Paediatric), accepting patients from a large area and last year saw over 1800 major trauma patients plus many more less severely injured patients. The Emergency Department is one of the busiest in Europe with 184,940 new attendances annually. We have a co-located Children and Young People’s ED which in 2022, saw 44,000 children and young people attend.

Main duties of the job

The remit of this role will be to work within the multi–disciplinary team providing care for patients within the ED at NUH.

In addition, you will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the department while having a commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.

A specialist in Emergency Medicine will practice clinically at the level of an autonomous independent specialist practitioner without routine consultant oversight.

The post is suitable for a highly experienced clinician who has not achieved specialist registration with the GMC or is not eligible for/ does not wish to apply for a substantive consultant post.

The shop-floor roster currently encompasses four distinct roles:

  • Resus Room consultant/Specialist
  • Urgent Treatment Unit consultant/Specialist

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Applicants wishing to work part time will be considered and modification of the job plan discussed with the ED Management Team.

A proposed Job Plan, based on 10 PAs is detailed in this job description and the on-call commitment is currently 1:20

The shop-floor roster currently encompasses four distinct roles:

  • Consultant/Specialist in charge of the entire department –based mainly in ED Majors Unit
  • Resus Room consultant/Specialist
  • Urgent Treatment Unit consultant/Specialist
  • Supervision consultant/Specialist

The continuing responsibility for the care of patients, as well as the proper functioning of the department is the overarching responsibility of the Specialist. These duties are subject to review from time to time in the light of the changing requirements of the service. If alterations to the described duties are required these will be mutually agreed between the appointee and the HOS.

Clinical Governance

Each Specialist is expected to take an active role in clinical governance activities including (but not restricted to) clinical audit, incident reporting, review of complaints, risk management, CPD, quality improvement and Evidence-Based Practice. The ED has Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement leads who work closely with the Clinical and Audit leads to ensure recommendations are communicated to the education team.

Person specification

Professional Registration and Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • MBCHB/MBBS
  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice at time of appointment
  • Post graduate qualification or membership of RCEM or RCGP
  • Provider for following life support courses: ETC or ATLS, ALS (or equivalent) to be obtained prior to appointment commencing

Desirable criteria

  • Specialty Certificate examination in Emergency Medicine

Experience

Essential criteria

  • 12 years minimum post graduate experience, at least 10 of which in Emergency Medicine.
  • Experience working at minimum registrar level at a large acute hospital

Desirable criteria

  • Specific training or qualification in patient safety and/or human factors
  • Point of Care Ultrasound trained

Management Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria

  • Ability to develop, present and operationalise ideas for service development/delivery

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of being involved with a significant change management programme
  • Higher degree or other qualification in leadership and management

Education , Research & QI

Essential criteria

  • Evidence of participation in QIPs / Clinical Audit.

Desirable criteria

  • Higher degree or qualification in healthcare education
