Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time (10PA) Medical Oncologist with a responsibility in Breast and Colorectal cancer for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

  • Opportunity to join the Consultant Oncology Breast and Colorectal (candidates who have preference for other sites are encouraged to discuss their preferences)
  • The post will be based at Nottingham City Hospital Campus with outpatient clinics at the City Hospital and at Kings Mill Hospital
  • More information including an indicative timetable for the post is in the job plan.
  • None of these tumours sites will be single-handed practice and will involve working along-side colleagues already specialising in each tumour site.

Main duties of the job

The speciality serves a resident population of 1.1 million and currently sees approximately 5,000 new patients each year (at City Hospital and Kingsmill); providing a comprehensive range of non-surgical oncology services to the East Midlands.

The Oncology Service has four dedicated oncology inpatient wards with 66 beds, which includes a dedicated Teenage and Young Adult Unit and its own oncology outpatient department. There are two outpatient systemic therapy wards with 35 chairs and six beds as well as satelite clinics at King’s Mill Hospital with a further 11 chairs dedicated to outpatient systemic anticancer therapy delivery. Oncology at NUH runs its own 24hr admission service with a 20 bed Specialist Receiving Unit which it shares with Haematology and a Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC). A rapid response triage emergency line is manned by our nurse led Cancer Admission Triage Team (CATT) using the UKONS telephone triage system. Oncology has invested in a high calibre acute oncology nursing team supporting the acute care of cancer patients admitted to city hospital campus as well as providing outreach support at Queen’s Medical Centre.

  • Full GMC registration and Licence to Practice
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • CCT expected within 6 months of interview date

Desirable criteria

  • Higher professional degree

Experience

Essential criteria

    • Experience and special interest in breast/colorectal cancer (or in agreed second site). Further support and training can be given if needed
    • Clinical Trials/Research
    • Experience in prescribing and managing patients with systemic anti-cancer therapy
  • Ability to make independent and appropriate clinical decisions

Desirable criteria

    • Experience of working with a complex multi-disciplinary team

Skills

Essential criteria

  • Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals
