This role will involve managing phlebotomy provision currently across the Maudsley and Bethlem sites as well as leading on point of care testing (POCT) Trust wide but will also be required to meet the needs of an evolving Trust. This requires representing the department at various levels and providing an advisory service across the Trust in relation to phlebotomy and pathology requirements. As such, the role will require travel to all sites across the Trust. The post holder will require excellent phlebotomy and communication skills, dealing with a variety of psychiatric patient groups and managing a small team of phlebotomists working in sometimes challenging situations. The POCT role facilitates routine surveillance of current POCT as well as research, development and implementation in exciting and innovative technology being put into clinical use; this will require an accurate, methodical and organised approach to prioritising work load. The role will also require facilitating external quality assessments with the requisite record keeping and entry into external sites.

The post holder will provide routine phlebotomy cover including POCT testing as and when necessary at the various sites covered. They will also be responsible for staff management keeping records of attendance and addressing absences appropriately, to ensure staffing levels are adequate by recruitment and use of agency staff whilst keeping to budget. Also ensuring staff are fully competent and meet all training requirements.

This post will also be a point of reference for matters relating to phlebotomy, pathology requests and the process of packaging and transfer of pathology samples to the pathology provider courier service.

A considerable amount of record keeping and audit for the Phlebotomy Department as well as for information required by the Pathology Provider is required to be curated by the post holder.

POCT roles would include supplying and replacing the Trust glucometers and facilitating a quarterly External Quality Assurance scheme as well as providing an advisory role regarding POCT to the Trust and participating in R&D relating to introduce new devices for use.

Reporting to the Head of Service you will have a deputy Phlebotomy Manager reporting to you as well as 2 part time phlebotomists at Maudsley and BRH sites. It is a small team and such we work together to ensure we provide an excellent service to the patients we serve and a flexible approach is required to ensure this happens happened efficiently. Job Purpose:
To be responsible for the day to day operational, financial and service management of the Phlebotomy Department. The service is provided to ward based and outpatients at the Bethlem and Maudsley sites.

To ensure that services provided by Phlebotomy staff are provided to the highest standard, efficiently delivered, effectively controlled within the budget and in line with Trust Policies.

To oversee specimen transport processes and service delivery is conducted as per the pathology service contract in collaboration with the Head of Service.

The role includes clinical duties, i.e. taking patients’ blood, supervision of staff, assessing competency of agency staff/new starters. Governance of stock / consumable ordering for pathology diagnostic testing. To lead on pathology test electronic ordering process and organising training.

In collaboration with and as directed by the Head of Service, lead on point of care testing governance to include; policy, SOP, training, evaluation, implementation, quality assessment, R&D.
